How Does One Care/Maintain Their Firsteel/Ferro Rod?

Hello Fellow BF Members-

Besides having several Bic lighters and weather proof matches in my bug out bag, I would like to also throw in a firesteel/ferro rod. But my question, how do you keep or maintain them while not in use to keep it in its optimum condition? From my searches, all I gathered was keep them away from anything salty such as sweat, contact solutions etc. So I guess just keep it in its own water proof container and call it good?

Thanks to all those who replies.

I've found that some will degrade even with that treatment. I consider them to be a consumable. a really long lived one, but still a consumable. That means checking them periodically, storing them away from other gear, that sort of thing. Depends on where you live as well. I live where its pretty hot and humid most of the year, so I try to keep gear clean and dry as much as possible since corrosion can happen to anything.

Some firesteels are threaded and screw into a tube with an o ring seal. Could prolong the life, just a thought.

I keep mine in my pocket...kind of a EDC thing. I work outdoors and never had a problem with any kind of corrosion.
