I guess the subject speaks for itself. In case you are wondering what I am talking about, jewelling is the process of making the pattern of repetitive circles on steel, similar to some rifle bolts. Thanks in advance!

I used to do a jeweled finish on silver with a common pencil eraser. Steel might be to hard but worth a try.Just make sure the end is flat and twirl it back and forth betweenyour fingers.

Thanks TJ, I wouldn't have thought of an eraser. I imagine if I chucked in my drill press if would be even easier.

Jeweling is normally done with a brush or rubber or fiber stick (like a one of the "eraser pencils" in a drill press. The brush or rubber/fiber cylinder is charged with an abrasive and then lowered onto the surface to be jeweled. The circular marks are made in a line, slightly overlapping eachother, and then the next line started to overlap the first, etc. Most gunsmithing books in the library will have a discussion of "how to". It helps to have an indexing jig to get nice even spacing and straight lines. I did it on a rifle bolt and it was tougher than I thought it would be to get the lines straight. Should be easier on a flat piece.

Jantz Supply carries the stuff to do it with a Dremel tool. Its fairly easy to do if you have one of those Dremel drill press set ups.

it is normally done with an abrasive compound, but i use small 1/4" wire brushes made just for that, chuck them in your drill press and go for it.....brownells sells them and so does one of the machine shop supply houses i use but cant remember which one, msc, travers tool, or rutland tool....dont push hard or the wire mushes easy, gentle firm pressure, i can do both undersides of a ti folder in about a minute or 90 seconds. it is really duck soup.if i were you id get the set from brownells

I just tried this with the pencil eraser and it works pretty darn good..

Although I went in a random pattern is still looks cool..
Done it on an old hunting knife with nickle silver bolsters..

could see that with some experience,, this would look SUPEr cool...

Thanks for the tip....
