Hi I am a new-be here and and was wondering if someone might explain the process of the manufacturing of Damascus. (modern Process) I've been told that modern Technics include using a hard core such as VG10 and then pattern welding the softer material to create the Damascus pattern on to it. is this correct and if not can someone please tell me a bit about the process? Thank you in advance

A lot of "damascus" blades you see are more correctly called "clad" or "laminated" blades. True damascus has the steel mix right through the blade - including the cutting edge.

Laminated blades do not have the pattern right through the blade but use a hard cutting steel for the cutting edge (eg VG10) and clad with layers of a softer steel. When ground and etched, the layers give a pattern similar to damascus steel but isn't true damascus.

Pattern welding damascus ranges from simple procedures to those that are extremely time consuming, complicated and ultimately, very costly. Many custom knifemakers choose to buy their damascus from the specialist makers rather than make their own because of the amount of work involved.

Blades "Guide to Making Knives" has a section on Pattern Welding by Rick Dunkerley - well worth a read

Very insightful... Great thread!
