How does one tell water vs. oil stones?

Picked up 2 old but unused Nortons this weekend. How to I determine if they are meant to be oil stones or water stones?

ohen, Thank you for your service. Norton has not made water stones as long as crystolon and India stones. Perhaps only 13-15yrs.. The oil stones are normally grey and reddish orange maybe brown. The water stones are beige and tan. Without a box try seeing how they respond to water, give them a soak in water and see if they get spongy. If they do you know. If not it's a oil stone. Also, during use a water stone develops a creamy slurry. The India stone doesn't. Good sharpening, DM
