i'm just curious how Spyderco sharpens all that knives in the factory. i'm particularly curious how they sharpen their spyderedge :o

Just like everyone else, on a belt sander. I assume the serrated edges are ground and then probably sharpened on a buffing wheel of some kind, which would explain why the serrated edge seem to be more polished.

I once heard a tale of a machine that hits the blade at an angle and cuts the serrations into the edge and then they are finished and polished. I have no idea if this is true, but I could see how that would make for very uniform serrations in the way the Spyderedge comes out.

Plain edges are sharpened by hand on a belt grinder, which is why the edge angle varies a bit. Serrated edges are sharpened on a shaped wheel made for that specific blade, so the entire edge is done at once. If you look at the serrations on a curved blade, you can see that the scallops are parallel to each other rather than perpendicular to the edge.

I've noticed that some companies that try and produce a curved fully SE edge, it's not as as Cleanly done as the Spyderedge.

I watched one of those shows on TV "how do they do it" and they filmed Leatherman tools being made. They showed a robot grinding the blade edges on a round stone like a bench grinder.
