I have an umnum and a small plain, 21 sebenza.

i am looking at a large sebenza 21 with some fancier handles as a possbile next CRK purchase.

i have never handled one with the micarta insert.

how is the micarta 'inserted'?

is it something as simple as a two sided tape, or is there a milled recess in the titanium to hold the micarta?

i imagine that there is room on the lock side for an insert, and that its not embellished only on the non-lock side.

also, does the micarta add any utility like more grip, etc or is it really 'just' cosmetic?

Both. There is a milled recess and double sided tape. If you're worried about the strength of the tape, don't; occasionally we have to remove inserts by punching them out through the back. The insert always breaks before the tape does.

Face and lock side both have inserts. I don't own a micarta sebenza so I'll let someone else answer your last question.

cheers,

I've handled a few and I think they do add more grip.

ipm, the Chris Reeve site explains how it's done. You'll have to click your way through yourself, I'm too lazy to give the link. :D It's exactly like nifegrinder explained. The use VHBT - Very High Bonding Tape which only gets better with age. I believe there hasn't, ever, been a story of inserts coming off.

I recently purchased an inlay small sebenza and I am glad I bought it because of its looks but I am still EDC my plain small sebenza. Maybe because it is my first seb but I think it is more because I like the smooth and elegant looks of the plain.

VHBT is used in the airplane manufacturing process..

Click on the link, Watch the video on the right side top of the page, The one in the large box, Watch it till the end and see the mirrored giant windows that are held on with VHB tape only. Worth watching......................
