How does the Proper slice?

I like to carry a slipjoint as a back up to my main folder. It's usually a SAK or sometimes a Case. Thinking about picking up a Proper but wasn't sure how good of a slicer it is?

I carry my 319, and it's become my favorite backup. The knife is an excellent slicer and only gets better with use. Try one, it's a good effort on the part of Benchmade.

Thanks for the review, bro!

I have both the green Micarta and red G10 models, and, like the OP, my 2nd carry is often a slip joint for a more discreet knife to use in public or to hand to someone. I don't know if I would term the Proper a great slicer, but it's certainly more than adequate. I like the blade shape a lot but would have preferred a higher primary grind that's somewhat thinner behind the edge. The blade stock is on the thinner side, however, so the knife slices well enough for casual, on-the-go use.

I've never been that big on slip joints, but like the Proper as well as the Collector Knives lionSTEEL Roundhead and Shuffler that feature traditional patterns but utilize modern materials and construction.

Compared to a SAK, Case trapper or GEC barlow you'll be disappointed.
The saber grind prevents it from being a good slicer.
I guess Benchmade was trying to make it look like a Benchmade. They don't quite get the slicing abilities that slip joints should have..

I just ordered a 318-1 with a Krein regrind and I am super stoked!

Just speculating that the slicing ability of this model will be greatly enhanced! :)

One would certainly think so, Kiteman. Kindly share some pics of that baby when you get it in.

I promise to try, I spent some time on my phone trying to post some last week and I couldn't get it to work so we'll see.

ETA: Posting pics on BF here is one of my great unachieved goals. Every time I try to get a friend to help me, we have to talk on the phone, and the only way I can possibly post them is from said phone, so its a bit of a catch-22. I will take my phone to church on Sunday and see if any of the teens there can give me a hand. I should have the new Proper then as well.

I picked up one as a gift for my grandpa, and I was less than impressed with the blade geometry. On the several samples I examined, they were not very thin behind the edge and, they have a saber grind with relatively thick stock for a traditional knife. Overall, the blade geometry is about equivalent to a normal modern folder, just with a narrower blade.

If you're good at sharpening it will become a decent slicer, but the blade geometry limits its' potential for 'slicyness'.
