Facts:

-I never owned a Kershaw
-I never owned a damascus blade
-I love my assisted Camillus
-I did not buy any knife in 2008 (sucked)
-It's my birthdray and just got some cash

And now I see those shallot blems that are quite cheap. I really like my Heat, it's a great user and I wonder how the shallot compares.

The Heat is AUS8 and made in Taiwan, or possibly you have one that is made in Spain with 440C. It has a Zytel handle. I believe Ontario makes them now. With about a 3.5 inch blade, I would guess a better comparison would be the Kershaw Blur.

The Blur is made in the USA, and comes in different steels, from New Old Stock in 440A, to 13C26, S30V, S60V (blems, available from kershawguy) and SG2. Aluminum T-6061 handles with Trac-tec inserts, and tip up/down configuration.

To tell the difference in the 440A and 13C26 blades, look for the BOD. If later than JUL07, its 13C26. This steel is an improvement over AUS8 or 440C as it will hold a very sharp edge for a good while, and I've had a few knives in Zytel, and personally I'm not too fond of it. It just doesn't feel as solid as other handle materials out there.

Look for kershawguy's thread on the S60V blems. Priced right, they are a very good bargain.

As for the blem Shallots, they are great bargains too. I don't think you would be disappointed in either should you buy one.

Welcome to the world of Kershaw!

If the shallot is to be a best Heat, I could only be happy.

I know it would be heavier since the handles are in steel instead of zytel. But as for the opening/handling would it be similar?

As for the steel, I would take the damascus one.

The Shallot opens with a spine flipper. Very fast and rock solid frame lock-up.

The DAM Shallots are beautiful!

+1 on the S60V Blur blems, but +1 on the Damascus Shallot blems, too. Still looking for the "blemish" on mine. Comparing the Damscus steel is a bit more problematic, perhaps, if only because layered Damascus steel is somewhat harder to quantify. The steel Kershaw uses for its Damascus blades is made by this outfit: http://www.alabamadamascussteel.com

I believe Kershaw has used their Random and Ladder pattern of late (in Chives, Scallions, Leeks, Shallots, and Skyline).

As a owner of many Heats and Blurs, the Blurs are a better quailty knife. Kershaw overall is a better company than the Twain or China made ( shipped from Spain but made in China which is why it says "product of Spain" instead of made in Spain) Heats, Blazes or Sizzles. I like the Heats and got several cheap when SMKW closed them out, but the Kershaw line is a step up for sure....

Belated Happy Birthday!!!

I also have just come across the blem Damascus Shallots and find them very appealing.

It would be my first Kershaw as well.

Decisions, decisions.

I ordered one.

I can always trade it on the forums if I don't like it. (Very unlikely)
