I just received my 710 in M390 and it seems pretty fairly sharpened it can shave quite easily although its not hair popping by any means would the sharpmaker maintain this steel if it I kept it sharp? the edge its at is fine but whats the sharpest the fine stone will get a knife? I don't want to drop another 40 on the the diamond and ultrafine stones as all my knives already have some degree of sharpness and I only want an edge maybe slightly above shaving.

The fine rods should keep your already sharp knives shaving or a little above. Ultra fine rods take it a step further. I don't go above fine in most cases, or above brown/grey (medium) in others.

You can easily get hair popping with the fine stones. However, if you use your knife hard, and it gets really dull, you'll have a dizzy of a time sharpening it back.

I doubt I would as its a LE It will probably stay purposely around shaving while a heavy use would be slightly duller and a endura 4 or other slicer I will try to get as sharp as possible.

The sharpmaker is a good system, just go slow and take the time to get the muscle memory down.

The ceramic stones are harder than any steel out there so they will do fine, but don't forget to keep them clean. You'll learn the slick feel when the stones get loaded -- give them a turn and keep going until you're out of clean sides. Barkeeper's Friend and a green scotchbrite do a good job, as do those little rust eraser things.

I profile my knives on my Edge Pro but use my Sharpmaker for all the maintenance work. Most of my EDCs are S30V and the Sharpmaker at 40 degrees is perfect to keep the edge working sharp.
