This design strikes me as being very utilitarian, yet also exellent for defense. Also w/ it being billed as a hunter rather than a fighter, if you ever had to use it in defense you would have a bit of advantage in court. How well does it lock up? How Deployable is it? Any Feedback is welcome as always!

There are several threads discussing the Wegner's various characteristics in the Spyderco Forum.

FWIW, I think that the C48 Wegner is one of the finest production folders you can carry, both in design and in Spyderco's excellent production. You are absolutely right about being it just as good defensively as it is in utility.

I have a Wegner Jr. with the partially serrated blade, and it is a great knife. I only wish I had gotten the larger version and in a plain edge, as I have fairly large hands. As a result, I have posted it on the Knife Exchange. However, the workmanship is excellent and the knife feels really good in the hand. This is my first Spyderco, but not my last. I just ordered a Military!

Tim Wegner came on one day and discussed the Wegner folder and made a very good point when he said that the knife was designed and made to cut flesh.
It is possibly one of the best defense folders out there IMHO, of course.
When I first handled the large Wegner one of the first things that struck me was how well this would serve in a wide variety of functions with self defense being quite high on the list. It is as Nemo and Fred Perrin so aptly put it, "polyvalent".
It deploys very fast, the lock up is SOLID, with a very reassuring KA-CHUNK!
I got one and I am completely happy with it. I can't find anything on it I would change if I could.

I have 3 Wegner Juniors so I'm obviously impressed with them. There is no other Spyderco that both feels and opens/closes like the Wegner. The liner lock engages midway inspiring confidence. All mine have the plain edge as their intended use is not box-openers.
I've use mine dressing out deer and can vouch for its flesh cutting characteristics.
The ATS-34 blade is satin finished and takes an excellent edge.
I just don't think you can go wrong with this knife or its bigger brother.
