hello,
realizing that the blade on this knife would only see very light duty usage, how durable is the carbon fiber handle(no liners)? will it crack over time? will abraiding it against change, keys, etc. scratch the heck out of it? will it chip or shatter if dropped onto a hard surface? will the knife deteriorate over time from just riding in a jeans pocket?
overall how does it's durability compare to titainium handled knives?

thank you,

well, ive only had it for two days! so i was wondering if it should be resigned to case queen or if i should actually use it! it wasn't cheap so i don't really wan't to watch it disentagrate!
my experience with carbon fiber and ski's isn't a good one. neither is it with bicycles. but, i figure this knife will not be under nearly as much stress as a bicycle or pair of ski's! if any one has it or any other linerless carbon fiber knife let us know!
of course, if i call benchmade they'll say it is made like a tank!

flame retardent suite on,

holdanedge,

The 770 is a fairly durable knife. The carbon fiber should hold up fine. It will not be as strong as bigger knives naturaly, but will do the job of a light duty carry very well. You have stated that this is a linerless knife. Well there are two liners inside the knife. They are partical liners that sit in a pocket inside the handles. I have one question for you. How come you always end your posts with talking about getting flamed? It just looks like you are trying to start trouble instead of looking for actual help.

i realize it is a small knife. all i wanted to know is, is the body of the 770 as strong as say, an umfaan?
i doub't i would break it opening letters. but, my experience with carbon fiber is that it cracks and delaminates just sitting there. this does not apply to carbon fiber that is fully bonded to metal. the 770 only has very small partial liners. the actuall frame of the knife is carbon fiber. knives that have carbon fiber scales are not using the carbon fiber as structural items. this knife is. anyways, i know someone that has the similar model from william henry that has one full liner for the lock. he said he has used it like it was a 7" bowie and it never broke! for what that is worth. like all bm's you have to pick a good one. i did. it is just so cool i would be sad if it cracked. also, i have already realized the cf stains real easily. well so does titanium i guess. this is just way cooler looking than an umfaan. is it as sturdy is what i'd like to know. well if these cf knives are indeed good, i think i will also get a boker ti-carbone! yes, the blade on that one is fragile. that is another thread :).

i also will probably get a xikar 158, see my earlier post about it.
i love small knives.

thank you,

I have a pre-production version that i bouht when they very first came out and I have given it a good bit of use. IIRC, I bought it in the late Spring or Summer of 2001. I have seen no signs od cracking or of delamination as yet. If the carbon fiber hilt is a concern, BM now offers an anodized aluminum hilted version a a much lower cost. Try this site for a look at one since 1SKS does not have the aluminum verions: http://www.knifeworks.com/product.asp?0=204&1=205&3=2606

nah, i am sorry i got out of hand before, i hope we can all get along now.
anyways, i guess the carbon fiber is tough. thank you for answering the question. intrestingly, my 770 does not look like the other 770's i have seen. it does not have the curled edges on the back and it is not polished. it is a very dull matt finish. maybe they forgot to finish it? ah, bm quality control! well, i guess being a matt finish is ok as it should not scratch up as easily. still, i think the polished finish is cooler. since it is bm's most expensive(?) knife it should be decent, i would hope. i know i said i like it better than an umfaan, but what the heck i think i'll get the umfaan too. the easiest way to not have to worry if one knife is "better" than another is just to get them all!
