Would one of the BIG shows like the one in Atlanta maybe be a one time trip for you?

:Probably. :-(

I live in Tulsa Oklahoma and we have the big Wanenmacher Gun &Knife Show a couple of times a year.It isn't just a straight "Knife Show" though.I have seen some awesome pieces here, and there are some really good makers in this part of the country.

One fellow makes a beautiful Damascus Japanese style short sword!
Then of course there are the makers that make the hunters and utility and camp knives.
My cuz bought a real nice 7" blade fighter that is really nice from a local fellow.

So,I guess that leads into ...

Do you support your local makers or go out of the area for your custom work?

:So far I haven't bought any "Custom" knifes.

I know there are several questions here and if one doesn't get answered to anyones satisfaction please feel free to make a new thread from any one of them.I would be interested anyway.

Thanks.

I guess I'm fortunate to live a few hours up the road from Atlanta. Several of us NC forumites drove down and stayed for all three days of this year's Blade Show. We've already decided to do it again next year. If you do get the chance to go, DO IT! We had a great time meeting and socializing with other forumites and, of course, being in knive nirvana.

NC is also home to the Southeast Custom Knife Show in September every year. Darrel Ralph, Koji Hara, Jot Sing Khalsa (sp?), Les Robertson, Bob Neal, and many others were on hand for last month's show.

Charlotte also has a large gun and knife show every two months. There are usually three large factory knife dealers, several other smaller dealers, and one or two local custom makers present. Forumites Dexter Ewing, Davidb415, DeadinNC, RJT, CPRaymond, and I get together for these shows. There's not much that we haven't seen at these shows, but we usually still pick up one or two things, have a BBQ lunch together, and have a good time showing off our latest acquisitions. It's a good way to spend a Saturday.

I'm a knifemaker in Edmonton, Alberta. The disadvantage to this is that there are no local knife shows. Even worse, there is not much of a local market for knives of the quality that I make. The local market is in cheap offshore knives and simpler working knives made by a few local makers. That means that in the last year my wife and I have travelled extensively to display at knife shows.

In direct answer to the question - 1970 miles to Atlanta, GA. That's only part of the picture though. In the past year we have also travelled to:

Vancouver, British Columbia - 507 miles
Toronto, Ontario - 1685 miles
Costa Mesa, California - 1386 miles
Las Vegas, Nevada - 1197 miles

I like to think that this shows serious dedication to craft. It may, however, show serious sickness. In either event, it sure is fun!

Longest I've ever traveled was 3 blocks from work to the New York Custom Knife Show. I've driven 890 miles total to purchase just one knife, though.

900 miles one way to Atlanta Blade show, man was that a long drive!

But I was easily beaten by Yekim, who traveled from Alaska by car!

Yekim, Where are you bud?
