They can hold up to some light stuff, but the BJ Viking Raider was more of a skinning axe for breaking down game. The 80's and early 90's had a lot of axe, cleaver, ulu combo knives.
The Benchmade AxCailber was another late 80s, early 90s design that did pretty good on wood, but I still can't see it being better than a plain real axe or hatchet -
