How good is AUS 118 steel? The upcoming CRKT M-16 full size tanto will have this steel. Is it superior to ATS-34/154 CM?

Steels with "fancy" names tend to have fancy names as their strongest property.....
So do steels with "secret" composition.

It is nice that CRKT has a steel page on their site:
http://www.crkt.com/steelfct.html

Unfortunately, it only covers the steels used by CRKT.

AUS118 has just shy of 1% carbon, so should be able to be treated fairly hard. It has a whopping 17-18% chromium, so should be more corrosion resistant than most of its competitors. It just has dribs and dabs of the common elements used for alloys, nothing outstanding like several percent vanadium.

I'd have to guess that it should be similar to 440C, but probably just a bit better. ??

Unfortunately, not everything which is printed on paper is necessarily true.
Sometimes it's just "marketing".

ZUT&ZUT,
How about actually giving us some info and adding to the discussion, instead of just posting cryptic messages that are vague and ambiguous at best? No offense, but if you're gonna underhandedly slam AUS-118 or ACUTO 440 (or whatever they're calling it now), give us some reasons.

ZUT&ZUT, if everthing that is printed is false then what do you rely on? Word of mouth is often false. You are making absolutely no sense.

The full size m-16 carbon fibre handled tanto is over priced since AUS 118 steel is not as good as ats 34/154cm.

The full size m-16 carbon fibre handled tanto will be the most expensive CRKT. For a knife company that makes the best knives for the money, the new m-16's price is running counter to this philosophy.

Sorry to resurrect a dead horse, but ZUT&ZUT's comment bothers me significantly.

It is not as easy to play the role of the world-weary cynic as some seem to think. I may be wrong, but the comment about everything printed not being true was, I believe, directed towards the info I provided, that I'd gotten on CRKT's steel site.

While there is usually some level of hype in marketing, there are areas where lying would be astronomically stupid -- like CRKT lying about the makeup of a steel they are using. I've not heard a word about CRKT making their own steel. They buy it from a manufacturer or wholesaler, I'm sure.

To intentionally misrepresent a product made by someone else, who very likely has the composition info printed out for the world to see would be lunacy. The errors/lies would soon be discovered, make it into the media, and, I believe, CRKT would potentially soon be out of business. To imply they would do so borders on stupidity. It also seems to imply that I'm stupid, naive, or both for accepting the veracity of the info I passed along.

Gotta admit that isn't a happy-making scenario.
