Im looking at getting a Rat in 1095 as a knife that will get abused a lot thats why im considering a Rat in 1095 as ive heard good things about them and that they are hard use knives and are well priced .
I considered Busse and Scrap yard etc but a Rat is a lot cheaper and easier to get and this is a knife i will just abuse so it wont be sitting with the safe queens and i dont want to care if i loose it or something.
Ive read lots of conflicting charts on blade steel strengths etc and the only 1095 i had was a damasus which i sold before i used it.How would a Rat in 1095 hold up as a hard use knife compared to the Busse family blades?.
I know it wont be as good as INFI or Sr-77 but does it even come close?.
Or should i just wait untill i find a decent deal on a Scrap yard or something?.

I love Busse knives. I have many of them ... from all three of the Busse family companies. And I beat them up all the time. It's fun and rewarding. :D

That said, I also have a few RATs. They are wonderful use knives for any semi-reasonable task. I love 'em and more are in my future.

But please, don't try to baton them through cement blocks. For that, you need a Busse FBM. ;)

I have the Ontario version. I love it. I have used it on wood and rope. I love it. Its not gonna be as strong ad a Busse, thats why its 200 buck cheaper. But i have to say i prefer Rat knives for beating up, trusting my life on and just about anything else. Knives aren't made to beat up concrete. thats why they make jack hammers. But i would recommend either version of the rat. I know what Ontario did was wrong but if you have a sertin budget t work with like me the ontario version is good. if you can afford it i would go with rat cutlery

Its not just the steel, the heat treatment makes all the difference and I have it on good authority that Rat Cutlery quenches the blades in unicorn tears.

So yeah, I would say its up to the task of a "hard" use knife. :)

Sorry to possibly beat a dead horse but what did Ontario do that was wrong? (I am not being a smart ass I really don't know)

I have a RAT-3 in D2, but other knives in 1095. I'd say, once you get it and use it, you WILL mind if you lose it ((( :D )))

Who is your source? While you are an individual of a most excellent reputation I know for a fact that Fred Perrin quenches the La Griffe in the blood of fallen demons.

This fact contradicts your theory.

To settle this, we need to acquire selected samples from various bladesmiths and send them to a neutral third party knife collectors to analyze the steel.

I shall volunteer to settle this once and for all in the name of peace.

No, they don't. Only European knives are quenched in unicorn tears. The best American knives are quenched in crocodile tears, instead.

agreed! the heat treatment makes or breaks the knife. without it, there really would be no point into the knife. IMO

That's fine with me so long as these crocs have as much magic as the unicorns...

I can't speak on the Busse knives (never having had the opportunity to use one), but my RC4 is serving to prove to me that a good knife can handle more abuse that I would ever have considered applying before owning one.

I love it and cannot wait until the RC6 is released.

1095 is good steel. U.S. bayonets(m-1,m-16) and combat knives(marine corp bowies) are made from 1095 try to break one.i ve got several and ive purposly abused the shit out of. tough steel. people tend to get caught up in the steel, true busses are super tough but they cost. your just never gonna never gonna kill a knife made from a good quality steel unless you use it to chop cement bkocks and why would you do that anyway?

Bayonets, cant tell you how many tips I have snaped m7 bayos batoning.
I'll have to say its about 2. :D

RAT cutlery is not that much more expensive then ontario rats(dont know why everyone is thinking this all a sudden), the few more bucks you pay for buy you better HT, grindlines, warranty, and overall quality.
