I noticed one of these at the local store, how good are they? are they tough? has the cut out ever compromised the tool? is it a good utility tool for urban and woods use?

Ontario knife is known for using good steel. I think their Old Hickory knives are still made with American 1095. Such a great value in knives. I'd bet the steel is very good. I'm not keen on the design but I'm not a hawk guy so take that into consideration.

Seems like more of an urban tool to me, and every other website that sells it. It would not go to the woods with me. I have a few Ontario products, the survival machete has the same thickness and handle, it can't chop wood either. It's tough as shit, but the edge is just too thick. Same for the RD Hawk, too heavy, the weight is not in the head, it's spread all over, and edge isn't made to chop wood. Very tough, it can take lots of abuse.

Don't all full tang hawks not have the weight in the head? The only full tang "hawk" i have is the estwing black eagle I'm playing with.

I just put my sp8on the sharpmaker.

The Winkler Knives 2 hawks have a full tang that is tapered, so they have more weight in the head vs. handle. They just feel more like a hatchet or traditional hawk, as far as their weight. The Ontario RD Hawk, OTOH, is very heavy in the handle. I haven't held a Spax, but it's handle material is probably lighter than the micarta of the RD.
