At our VFW, it's mostly grumpy old men, and a few younger fellas. Most are good folks and get along fine, but for the most part when one are group is there the other isn't. Well, I know where they all were this week. We had a ton of flooding here this week. My storage unit flooded pretty bad and all my stuff got wet. I lost a table saw, compound mitre saw, a drill press and a buttload of assorted battrie to. All my Navy stuff got soaked to. My old uniforms as well as all my pictures. When I saw it I just closed it up, signed a waver for the storage folks to trashcan all. Well, my VFW pals went and cleaned the unit out, tossed the trash and one guys wife who happens to be in the business of restoring photographs is working on my pics, as well as scanning them all onto a flash drive. Basically I went to a storage unit expecting to clean a mess and found a clean ass unit that even smelled pretty dang good. Mind you, these guys have their own flood mess to clean up to. Pretty dang awesome bunch of dudes.

good folks all over. about 4-5 years ago, we had major storms in Alabama, several tornadoes of higher classification- you may have seen it on the news. parts of major cities destroyed etc. We had a large one run within a half mile of my house. utter destruction in places- houses simply vanished as if never there, not to mention the other destruction in the tornado track.

Thousands of people turned out to help with the clean up and other work, fixing food for volunteers, collection of gear, donations, homes opened up, you name it. - They helped everyone, regardless of race, creed, color, religion, or whatever...

Most folks are basically good, and if you give them a chance- they can be downright awesome! Give me a herd of determined red-necks, and I can get some stuff done!

Those who have served share a strong bond. They answered the call when their country needed them or because of a sense of duty and honor. Not surprising that when a dirty job needs to be done, they step forward and do it. They've done it before with their service and if they can help a brother in arms directly, so much the better. Nice to find out that those grouchy old men have a soft spot or two in there somewhere. (But don't let it get out too far and ruin their reputations.) Also helps that you know the fellows or have at least seen them at the hall (and vice versa) and each knows that the others are members of a rather small and special group. Sorry for your loss but nice to know there's help out there and from where you might not expect it.
Pete
