How hard core is the 940?

Hey guys,

I'm looking at the 940, since it's a relatively flagship model, and it seems to have everything I love.

But, I'm a fan of strong folders that can withstand good use and the rare abuse. How good is the 940 in more heavy duty situations? Possibly even camping with shaping some sticks, and the cutting things like hoses? How much is too much for this famed folder?

I would say its a sturdy little folder, im sure it would do fine against any task. but, it has smooth aluminum scales, and a rather slender overall body. I dont own one but i have handled a few. Its a small knife with a good blade length. IMO something like the presidio (if you like the aluminum) or the griptillian is better suited in the heavy duty situation. due to the ergonomics and more useful over all shape.
I wouldnt call the 940 hardcore, maybe in comparison to other folders of its style

it is a sweet knife. and im thinking of getting one myself.

Its pretty durable, but no 2.8 ounce folder is going to be killer strong. For normal knife usage, including carving sticks and cutting hoses, you won't have any prob whatsoever. You don't want to pry up manhole covers with it, though.

Thanks for all of the replies. What got me thinking is how much I abused my little SAK when I was little. It has a thin blade, no lock, and yet it probably cut through thousands of sticks and never got sharpened. So something like the 940, while It is lightweight and can be a gentleman's folder, it can be seriously used in both city life and in the wild, as long as you don't use it for bullsh** like spine whacking.

The knife is plenty strong for daily uses. Plus there's the bombproof warranty that comes with it to consider.

One of the reasons I prefer Benchmade over other brands is because of their transparency and willingness to share test data such as this.

Don't be fooled by the small size of the 940. The 6061 aluminum handle is very strong although not very grippy. Throw in an axis lock, stainless liners, and S30V blade and you have a very tough little knife.

The 940 can stand up to what you were describing. Ive taken it camping and ive used it to carve stakes for my hammock rain tarp. Ive used it to cut gas lines and hoses on a Jeep lift job. It can handle it.

My son is an engineer and is really hard on things. I got him a 940 and he has used it for a year cutting sheet metal, wire, etc. today we used it to cut up a huge carpet. It looks used, and is dull right now but takes a good edge and a surprising amount of abuse for a knife it's size.

I've been thinking about getting one too. but should I get it coated or satin?

Satin.

Duc, I gave my construction electrician brother my 940, he also beat it to hell. Still opens like a dream. Benchmade did that model right.

The 940 is one of my favorites, I sold mine off a while ago and I've been regretting it ever since. It's one of the rare folders that you could wear to a fancy coat-and-tie cocktail party, and when you get bored, jump the fence, walk out into the woods, and use it to construct a brush shelter. It really is a slick, classy, jack-of-all trades knife and would definitely be up there for my pick of best all-around folder ever.

Let me put it this way: I don't regret selling my Sebenza half as much as I do my 940.

Ditto on the satin. And if truth be told I gave my son mine and bought myself another a month ago. It is a super knife, I have no idea how it stands up to so much abuse. And the 940 and 943 are basically the same with different points, spear vs. tanto.

Would it be safe to say while the 940 can handle much more use than other knives its size it does however show use much easier and quicker than most knives. ..?

I had mine for about 6 months, and it still looked perfect, handle and blade. I'm sure eventually the al handles may scuff a bit, bit its pretty durable in my experience.

Does it show faster than other anodized aluminum handles? I don't think so.

Benchmades s30v is no slouch and neither is the axis lock.

Very broad questions.
