How hard do you SAK?

I know that Swiss Army Knives, particularly Vic. brand have a very good reputation here. I know I love all of mine. Recently I had been making a new handle for one of my swords. I used a wide variety of knives and tools for carving out the area for the tang, and I must say that the SAK impressed! I could get very controlled cuts that were very smoothe. Over all, I'm very happy with the job my Victorinox Spartan did.
So how hard do most of you use your SAKs?

Very.

I carry a sak edc for the versitility of all the tools. I've really fixed things using a sak. It's the handiest knife to have on you anywhere. I have not carried a single blade knife in years, exept for an Opinel, or my old Mercator, as a dedicated cutter. All my edc's are multi-blade slip joints like saks, stockmen, barlows.

I use the ones I have pretty hard.

I use the woodsaw for cutting small branches off or shortening a stick to good length that is sitting on the forest floor (to be used as a hiking staff).

Look at my name. I LOVE SAK's. :)

I used my Fisherman and Swiss Champ models very hard as a boy growing up in Oregon. They never let me down.

I've used mine to an almost abusive standard. I carried a Vic Swisschamp for years. In that time,

I dropped it on hard floors over the years,

dropped it in water,

forgotten it on wet ground (in the rain) for a couple of days,

spilled gas, oil, hot water and other dastardly chemicals on it,

left it in a car on the dashboard in 100 and below zero degree weather,

used the tools as prybars at times

did minor car repairs with it,

put together a 5.5 foot tall entertainment center with it

used it as a hammer,

used it as a door jam,

and did not clean, or lube it for about 5 years.

The Swisschamp and my other SAK's always bounced back for more.

My oldest SAK is a Swiss Champ from 1990 that I carried as an EMT and through countless fishing and hunting trips, it's on it's second set of red scales from being dropped on pavement when I was an ENT, but the knife itself is still going strong.

I wanted to add that I have a Pre-1991 Victorinox Ranger that is also still going strong. I've sharpened the blade and I also sent it back to Victorinox about a month ago. They put new scales on it, and straightened a bent blade up for me. Still a great knife. :) I've even used the wood chisel on it when whittling before :)

I've used my tinker half to death, and it's no worse for the wear. Cutting sheetrock, car repair, electrical work, weeding, grout chiseling, etc. there is hardly a home repair i've done in my house that that knife hasn't been involved in.

I find I don't use the blade quite as hard as other things. For some reason, I'll pick up a SAK even if I'm in a room with a screwdriver to tighten a screw. I also use my scissors on some pretty thick stuff often (zip ties etc.). I've gotten a lot better about babying knives, and now if my SAK gets a little spray of water I won't get obsessed until I can get it all out, because my experiences have made me realize just how resistent they are to rust, and I also realize now how tough the tools are despite the looks. But I still don't let people touch my knives :D

My Cybertool sees a lot of abuse. I install doors, mostly steel ones for a fellow who has his own business and you'd be surprised how often the little bit kit on that thing comes in handy. The smallest philips are the perfect size for adjusting the tailpieces on a lot of locks and locksets.

Say, those sound handy. I'm now awaiting a new knife, but when it comes, my SAK OHT is goin back in the belt pouch so I don't gotta leave home without it.

I've got a few SAKs but I'm pretty easy and careful with mine. If I need heavy duty work, I use regular tools. But standard stuff like opening packages, slicing fruit, easy screwdriver use are done with my SAK.

I've used them pretty hard on occasion, but sometimes I was sorry. I used one to cut non-skid tape (like skateboard tape) and the results were not pretty. On the other hand, I don't know of many knives that would do well cutting that stuff for very long without a lot of resharpening. Probably a good task for a carpet cutter with disposable blades.

SAK's are great! Althought I don't use mine as much as when I was a kid I still use them all the time and when I was kid I put it through more abuse than any SAK deserves I pryed everthing with it's thin blade and still have the knife in good condition to this day.
