how hard is d2 to sharpen?

Sharpening isn't an issue. However, re-profiling is very difficult. If the edge is ground properly then you will be able to maintain it with the sharpmaker.

Maintain it is the key word dont let it get to dull and you want have a problem.

I've never had any trouble on a Sharpmaker. It can take a bit longer if it's extremely dull - like 5-10 minutes instead of 3-5 minutes. That's something I can live with on the few D2 blades I have.

This is more of a "sharpening" thread than a "traditional knife" thread. Moving to Maintenance and Tinkering.

Try the search feature as we discussed this last week. A Norton SiC stone will easily sharpen D2. DM

ive heard d2 steel is very hard to sharpen..i sharpen with a spyderco sharpmaker....should I be concerned?

Do you have any knives with S30V? It grinds about the same.

If you don't have a diamond plate or the diamond sharpmaker rods then that might be a helpful addition. A SiC stone works well too if your on a budget.

Your Sharpmaker will easily keep it sharp because that's what it's good at. To get the bevel where you want it might take a coarser stone.

D2 is one of those alloys I just can't stand. It has had such a bad rap for sharpening over the years due to a certain maker's heat treat. Sharpening their knives was a chore. And the grinds they would put on their knives.....good night I don't like them at all. Not naming names, but I bet you can figure it out. I've seen D2 act like a freakin diamond trying to sharpen it, and I've seen D2 that acted like spring steel trying to sharpen it.

I've never had a problem sharpening it. But all I use to sharpen is a DMT Diasharp diamond double sided stone. I can sharpen any steel on it fast. As said though reprofiling can be a choir but do-able
