How hard is it?

In another thread somewhere somebody had this great idea of a glossary or suchlike for the forum with a list of the abbreviations and their meanings and so on. One of the things I'd like to see is a list of all the steel types mentioned here and what their relative hardness is and the pros and cons of each and if they are suited to any particular purpose and so on. Some of the exotic stuff like Damascus could be explained too. Is it a good general purpose steel or is it just a pretty steel to make knives look nice, that sort of thing.

HarDness depends more on how the metal is heat treated than its alloy.

This definitely sounds like a good idea to me. I'm not very knowledgeable on steels, so a sticky thread for reference would be nice. Of course, creating such a thread doesn't sound like an easy task to complete, but I think it would be very useful to many on BFC.

Right here on Bladeforums, with links to other sources, too: BladeForums.com Knife FAQs.

Look up at the top line of this (and every) Bladeforums page:

Check out the TUTORIALS / FAQ's for all sorts of fun information, including the Knife FAQs linked above! :D

Harness depends more on how the leather is tanned and stitched than on the animal it was made from :p

Remember that hardness and edge retention are not necassarily related. For example Talonite has excellent edge retention but is not very hard.
