How heavy is too heavy for EDC! I'm looking at a few 5 oz plus and just don't know

I wear jeans at work and regularly carry my xm-24 spanto. At 7.7 ounces I don't even notice it. I think it really depends on what you wear and how sensitive you are.

I carry heavy everyday and i second the thought that it depends on your preference to weight. Im used to it and i actually feel strange without carrying a little weight

That's a completely subjective question and varies by individual and carry method. Nobody can answer that question for you. Heaviest knife I tend to carry is a Case Large Stockman, loose in my pocket, that's about 4 oz.

Most of the time my carry knives are between .7 oz and 2.5 oz.

I try to stay around 5, but too wide or too long bothers me more than too heavy.

My Contego is that heavy or more, but it has a deep carry clip and its fairly thin. It carries better than you think it would.

It will depend on the knife, but a little weight is not an automatic deal breaker for me.

The heaviest knife I've carried is probably the ZT 0301 (8 oz). For that knife, I carry it in my back pocket. It's just a bit too wide to comfortably fit in my front pocket without really obstructing access to keys, wallet, etc.

For me, weight is less of a factor than the physical size the knife takes up in pocket. For example, the ZT 0200 is actually a bit lighter than the 0301, but it is also bulkier to the point that I haven't yet worked out a comfortable way for me to carry that particular knife. And on the flip side, the Manix2 LW is a bit lighter than the Caly3 CF, but the latter is significantly more comfortable to carry for me.

A Mission MPF or an Emerson Commander. That's my maximum load.... but I'm get'n old.

I'm already old. William Henrys for me. ;)

Well that's not altogether true. But I generally prefer knives that weigh 4 ounces or less. (3 ounces or less is my sweet spot. :))

I'm coming to prefer thinner, lighter weight knives. I think the heaviest folder I own is the Spyderco Gayle Bradley.

The problem with this question is that too heavy for ME, will be not an issue for YOU....

That being said, I don't understand this "weight" mania.
We are talking ounces, and it's not like we won't be able to walk because we carry a knife that weighs too much.

I have carried everything between 2.5 to over 6 ounces and honestly, weight has little to do with anything.
Right now I am carrying a knife that's 5.3 ounces and I can't feel it...it's not an anchor.

What is much more important than weight is actual size, in terms of width, and how it sits clipped in your pocket.
This will determine if it bothers you, or makes it hard to get your hands in your pockets to grab other things.......

I edc an XM-18 3.5 and it disappears in my pocket. I don't even notice the weight.

Anything over 4oz is 'too heavy' for me.

The Spyderco PM2 at 3.75oz always makes it's prescence known while the Stretch at 3.4oz almost disappears in my pocket. The Delica, Native, and Manix2 LW are ideal in the 2.5oz~3.0oz range.

I carried my bk2 every day for probably a year after I was forced to sell my entire collection except for it before I started getting more knives again....at first you'll definitely notice the weight, but as the days go by it starts to become unnoticeable. Then if you ever carry a lighter knife, you'll feel like your missing something lol

I'm gonna agree that this all comes down to personal preference. Of course, I will be in the minority, because I have a hard time carrying anything over 4-5oz... majority of the time I wear running shorts or board shorts.

I own some very nice +5oz knives, they just don't see as much pocket/IWB time as my trusty FRN Spydercos. In jeans I probably wouldn't have a problem with anything around 5oz but beyond 6, it'd be a bit more noticeable.

I wear tight jeans and carry my knives clipped to my right front pocket. Weight is not a big issue for me. The heaviest knives I carry are probably a ZT 0561 and a Spyderco Gayle Bradley folder. Clipped to my pocket I don't even notice them. I had a ZT 0200 for a little while and its weight was more noticeable.

Now OTOH if I try to put a knife in the bottom of my pocket, I notice knives that are much lighter than 5 oz. And if I am wearing dress pants or Dockers, the weight is even more noticeable.

As noted, it totally depends upon the individual. I wear jeans every day, and I quite often carry folders clipped inside my front pocket that are in the 8-10oz range (Lansky X9 Responder and A.G. Russell Sunfish with lanyard and kydex pocket clip for example) without issue.

I have a hard enough time keeping my pants up. Mini Grip is the heaviest knife I carry on a regular basis in the summer. I think it's just over 2.5 oz. Typically carry a Tasman SE, which clocks in at 2 oz.
