How I abuse my Commander

You know, when I first got my Commander I was so excited to have it and carry it. I practiced and practiced using the Wave in my pathetic attempt to become proficient. Anyway, the only problem was, I was afraid to use the darn thing for fear of dinging it up.

I stand before you now to say I am cured. Oh, its first use was hardly heroic, simply using the blade shave hair from my arm. Then I used it to slice off a snagging cuticle and round off a sharp corner on a fingernail. Then I used it cut a ribbon off my 1 year old's birthday present, and just today I found myself cutting through the tape and grocery bag wrapping of a package we got in the mail. At this rate, I am worried about the life of the blade and have to resharpen the thing almost nightly.

How long can my Emerson stand up to this kind of abuse? Will Emerson replace the knife if I get a fingerprint on the blade?

(p.s. My month old son kept me up all night and I AM feeling the effects of it, which may account for this post)

Just think, at this moment, the collectors of Emerson Knives are running for their crucifixes and Garlic hoping to send you back to where you belong for even taking the knife out of it's box for too long.

On behalf of the users of Emerson Knives though, WELCOME ! !

Scott475,

Welcome to the first steps on a long and slipery slope. I am sure that others of the Usual Suspects can remember a time when they just thought that an Emerson was just a knife and could be used for such important but mundane tasks. We now know better.

One very important question for you, why are you only resharpening nightly? With all of the negative comments in these parts about the location and type of blade ground on the Commander and all Emersons, you must need to touch up the edge after every cut?

I only ask this as it has been such a long time since I dared use one of my Emersons.

From the posts by Derek, I beleive that the factory will remove finger prints from the blade for a modest $20 charge.

Again welcome to the journey my friend.

Ed

My user, '98, serialized, plain edge Commander just got it's first sharpening in a year and a half . . . . . and it's scary sharp again!

John,

Whatcha using to get a 'scary sharp' edge on your Commander? The factory edge on mine is only 'kinda scary sharp'!

I had a dink in my blade (don't ask, it's a long and ugly story involving cutting a woman out of a flipped truck) and I had the blade reground. It's freakin' laser sharp now.

John,

Would it not have been easier just to open the truck door?

This must be some form of Florida etiquette that I don't understand.
