How I centered the blade on my Spydeco Manix

Hi. I just thought I would share with you guys the way I came up with to center the blade on my Spyderco Manix. First the blade was not off so much as to rub or anything but enough to spot easily and enough to bug me. The blade had no play either vertically or horizontally either. I had read that you could open it and try gently bending it until it took a set, but I was afraid of inducing blade play.

What I did was close the blade and tighten the pivot down tight enough that it was difficult to open. I then took a strip of three by five card and rolled it up into a thick dowel shape. I took this and smashed it flat to form a wedge of sorts. then with the knife closed I wedged it between the blade tip and the knife liner such as to push the tip pf the blade against the liner on the other side, the side that I wanted the blade to be closer to when centered. I also laid a piece of paper between the liner and the blade on the other side so that when the blade was held up against the liner there would be no chance of scratching the blade. The reason I tightened the pivot first is that I thought this would lessen the chance of creating blade play at the pivot. I left the knife with the wedge pushing on the blade for about a day and a half. I then removed the wedge and protective paper and adjusted the pivot back to the appropriate tension and the blade is perfectly centered. I still have have absolutely no blade play of any kind and am very happy.

I don't know but I thought maybe this would help someone else so I thought I would share it.

Sorry I don't have a way nor the privilege of posting pics. It's pretty simple though. what I basically wanted to do was put a small amount of stress on the blade to hopefully move it's set point a little to the other side while keeping the amount of stress to the pivot as low as possible. I also didn't want to scratch the blade. I figured a wedge applied a the tip, with a tight pivot would work slowly over time. I figured paper would make a good wedge vs wood or plastic to minimize scratches to the blade. This is a serial numbered green Manix that I will not use (putting it away for my boy who is now five).

I'm not sure but it is also possible that I'm not very clear because I am on heavy pain medicine (I had surgery on a tendon in my hand yesterday). I only feel a little buzzed but my wife is telling me I am acting very weird. Sorry. Feel free to ask me any questions. I have always been able to center the blades on my liner locks by adjusting the pivots but that didn't work on the manix. I posted a question but didn't get an answer, so I came up with this and it worked so I'm happy.

Good post trucker!:thumbup: The way I do it to center blades is to;

1- Open knife
2- slightly loosen the pivot screw
3- push the blade, using the flats, towards the side it is closest to, ex. if the blade is nearly rubbing one of the liners you still push the blade towards that liner.
4- close the blade to check alignment, and if right, tighten the pivot to desired strength.
5- if not correct, do again.

I've used this method with great success ever since reading about it right here on BF.

Hey Cutter17 I would sure love to read that link. I am not allowed to search. If you would post that link I would sure appreciate it. Thanks.

Hi Trucker.............nothing like posting when your "high" on the narcotics!!:D;):D Been there, done that, and sometimes miss it!;)

As far as a link, I have no idea as it has been a couple of years, maybe 3 years since I came across it. Sorry. You can search the forums using google though. __________ site: bladeforums, with the item your searching for going in the blank, and the whole thing going into the google box. At least I think I put up the right posting.

I really like this knife... New Graham is all out. Knifeworks has some. I should order one before they run out, but... $125! :(

Are you talking about the Manix THG? This is a discontinued model, although Spyderco has recently released a sprint run with green foliage G-10 scales. Check at the pharmacy.

THG I would say get one fast. This is embarrassing to admit but after I received my first on I loved it so much I bought 4 more. I think there is something wrong with me. I didn't have any lockbacks because all I remember as a kid about lockbacks was loose sloppy blades and knives that would close on me if I gripped them too tight. Maybe they were crappy knives I don't know. My first experience with high quality locking folders was some linerlocks. I read several posts by STR speaking of how good and long lived a quality lockback is, so I thought I would try the Manix. None of the 5 I received have any blade play of any kind and they lock up hard and solid. They are awesome. None of the blades were perfectly centered but they weren't off much. The one I worked on was the most off center so it bugged me, but I'm just being a perfectionist. I must be buzzed this post is way longer than I meant. I have bought knives from Knifecenter and they seemed decent. I would get one if you want one soon.

There is nothing wrong with you trucker, it is the rest of the world that has a problem!!:D

Save one for me! lol

I'm gonna wait a month or so and see if they still have them in stock... If not, then I'll get a Caly 3 or Foliage Green Para-Military D2. In the past 3 months, I've spent probably over $250 on knives and knife accessories... Might not seem like a lot to you guys, but it's a lot to me. But this Manix just seems like one hell of a monster knife...

Hi THG. I would guess that in a month there will definitely be no more. Knifecenter.com shows them in stock and I have had the gentleman there hand pick knives for me before and they were perfect. I just cannot stand blade play in a brand new knife. I know someday it may develop but I don't like it in a brand new $100+ knife. call them and he will hook you up. The Pharmacy is the place that sent me the two serial numbered Manix, and they are great to do business with too but I don't think they will get more.

It's not a monster knife and that's one of the things I love about it. I have all the ZT folding knives with the exception of the M.U.D.D. and I consider the 0300 a monster ( a monster I love) I also have a Lone Wolf Harsey folder that is beyond monster. The Manix is large but has a very refined feel to it. It is thick but not too thick. The blade is a slicer no two ways about it but also has a stronger feel to it than the blade on the Spyderco Military. I put 30 degree inclusive angle on it with a 40 degree inclusive micro bevel and I am shocked at how well it cuts and retains it's edge. I used to carry my 0300 or 0200 exclusively but since getting the Manix it has not left my pocket. I like being able to un-clip and drop it in my pocket when I go around people who might freak at the sight of it sticking out of the top of my pocket. I do the same thing with my Spyderco S90V Military, which is another knife I suggest getting before they are gone. I have had some assisted openers pop open when loose in my pocket and give me a real nasty surprise when I reached in to get something. I don't put them in my pocket loose any more ( ZT 0200 is fine). I am a big guy and love big knives and I love the Manix.

I am going to write Spyderco and was thinking if others felt the same as me and wrote them maybe we would get something really cool.

Here is what I will try to convince them to do. I want a sprint run of a S90V Manix. Lets point out to them that they probably have S90V steel stock left from their S90V Military run to make the blades, they most likely have more skeletonized liners left from the current Foliage Green Manix run and I doubt they are lacking black G-10 or carbon fiber. It would probably be super simple at this point in time to put out a S90V Manix. I would buy several. If anyone else feels the same way please join me in writing them. I really think they would consider it as they have the steel and are set up for production.

Hey Cutter17, while I can't wait for my hand to heal I have to say I'm with you, I find these narcotics seem to agree with me. I would inject a happy face here but don't know how. LOL.

Thanks THG I will tomorrow. hopefully my head will be much clearer. Sorry if I was hard to understand tonight.

I for one haven't had a problem understanding you at all, you've been quite clear.

I wish my neighbor who's been stoned out on back pain meds for the last year was as easy to understand as you.
