How I would upgrade the Endura

Hi Folks

I have spoken to several of you here, and also to some on the other forum from time to time on this issue. Overall, I really like the Endura, but it is not perfect. If I were to upgrade the knife, I would change the handle shape to be more like the Military, but with no rear guard, so I can move my hand around a bit. Basically, that's it. Those finger bump things are simply in the way on the current handle. I like the Millie handle a lot more.

Now, I would like to suggest an optional change. I would like the lock upgraded like the Native 5 back lock. Simple.

This is the knife I carry with me most when I am out walking. A Delica goes with me otherwise. So, having spent a lot of time with the Endura, this one simple change to the handle would make all the difference, and I know I am not alone in this.

Opinions?

The only change I'd like to see is the old style blade returned with the pointy tip; but that ain't goin to happen.

The handle shape seems to be the one part of the Endura that most people complain about. I own two Enduras and like the knife a lot but it never does seem to fit in my hand correctly. The handle shape would seem to be an easy redesign that would really improve the Endura.

I hope Sal will look in on this thread. We were discussing this on another thread about something else and it got kind of off topic so I thought I would start another one on this topic. The Endura is a wonderful knife, especially for us urbanites. But that handle really needs some work. The Military handle style is just the ticket without that pommel guard, or much less of one. The Millie is the only knife I actually like the choil on, too, but I do not want a choil on the Endura. I like the finger guard much, much better.

change the handle shape. i find that two finger front section to be too small for two fingers on my hand and too big for 1 finger. also make the blade a straight drop like point, similar to lances reground pacific salt, rather than the slight down sweep to the tip like it is currently. i highly dislike this blade shape, and surfingringo's regrind to smooth out the spine and so much more user friendly and useful for my tasks.

I agree with everyone else on the handle shape. Like jbmonkey said, I just don't know what to do with that front groove. Too small for two fingers and too big for one. I can only assume that the knife was designed for two fingers in the front groove since the middle groove is only big enough for one. The Endura doesn't feel just right to me no matter how I hold it.

Regarding the tip on the Endura 4, some like it better and some not as much as the E3. The reason they changed it is the Endura and Delica (compared to some of their higher priced offerings) often make it into the hands of folks who are a bit more rough on their tools. They were getting too many folks complaining about breaking tips (likely using them to tighten screws ;)) and decided to make the tip a bit more "reinforced" on the e4. I am perfectly fine with the change because it is a really simple matter to straighten the spine out with a grinder or just a piece of sandpaper. I would rather they keep the blade shape as is. It's super easy for those of us who want a straight spine to sand it down but its impossible for folks who want a stronger tip to add metal.

I agree about the handle. I really like the knife and blade length when I want it (camping, hiking, backpacking) so I did a re-profile on that first big bump in the handle that just bothers me when I hold Enduras. I've eyed a military partly due to the handle but like the Endura more now with a slightly changed handle.

What is the difference between the Native and Endura lock?

I didn't see anyone else answer this. The Native 5 has an upgraded back lock that improves certain features of the lock over previous incarnations like on the Endura. I can't speak to the specifics of the upgrade, but I'm sure someone else will chime in.

The lock on the Native 5 has been completely re-engineered and is the best backlock I have ever used. The tolerances are incredibly tight and the knife locks up like a bank vault.

While I have no capability to address the back lock… I did play around in CAD this morning to attempt to move the Military onto the Endura… similar to what I did with the Delica.

To achieve the profile modification going from the stock Endura to that of the Military… it will require trimming of the stainless liner nose… the amount needed trimmed is represented by a dotted red line on the upper CAD image. It's all rather straight forward from there.

Until a set is machined and in hand I cannot comment on the ergo's nor comfort.

The CAD render has an inlaid contrast color pivot ring as I felt it improves the illusion of a Military with the Military having the large pivot hardware… an aesthetic thing...

Always bringing the innovation and wants, to the masses!!!
Looks Great!

Can't ask for much more, for the Endura or the Delicas, with your scales!

I love the Endura and not really in favor of the handle change, I think it would be too drastic and loose the whole Endura identity. At that point you should just ask for a PM 2 with VG10 and a CFR handle....which is not such a bad Idea!

Steve that is too funny. I just emailed you about this exact thing! Ha!

I like the Endura as-is but Boomer might change my mind. Nice work!

I definitely think that having the two finger space in the middle at least might be more comfortable. I don't mind how it is now too much, though.

I really like the Endura 4. It's so easy to have in your pocket for such a big solid knife.

My hands must be similar to Mr Glesser's, because the Endura handle works great the way it is. I can choke up on the blade or back and it fits perfect with the finger indetentations. I have large hands and like larger knives, the Delica handle is almost too small. I guess that is why Spyderco makes the variety that they do, to have something for everyone.
