Ok, I got no less than a dozen emails from folks wanting to know how I wrap my 14/24's.

It ain't magic, its just paracord, and real easy. I found this one that I liked in the ESEE forum. I done a search on Izula handle wrap, and lo and behold, up pops a ton of stuff.

Anyhoo, I wanted to post up something to get ya'll started.

First things first, TAPE UP THE BLADE!!!!!!!!!

I cannot emphasize this enough, tape up the damn blade. You may feel like you don't need to, don't want to, etc.......whatever. Tape up the blade or you WILL GET CUT!!!! Every BK14/24/Izula bite I have ever seen, came from wrapping the handle. TAPE UP THE BLADE!!!!!!

That said, I didn't tape mine up, because I wasn't actually wrapping the handle, but you better bet your ass when I do one for reals, I tapes up the blade. You do the same. There will be some joker that thinks I'm BSN ya'll about this, and he'll get cut. Just the way it is.

Ok, you're gonna need some paracord and a knife to wrap.

Check.

On your Eskabar/D'eskabar, make sure the ESEE is facing up. It doesn't really matter, but it helps you work from the same side, so all your knots line up symmetrically. Pass the paracord under the right stem, and over the left stem.

Then, take the cord that went over the left stem, and pass it under the left stem, making a loop.

Pass the cord that went under the right stem, through the loop and over the left stem.

What was once passing over the left stem, is now passing under the right stem, and vice versa. You will want to pull it tight, as tight as you can get it, and push it up towards the blade. It won't hold for long, so, once you start, you gotta keep going. You don't get the chance to come back and tighten anything up, so, make sure it is as tight as you can get it, and centered in the opening.

Repeat over and over again, until you fill up the void. You can get 11 knots in the web of a BK14/24 and 10 in the web of an Izula. If you keep everything tight and pushed up, you are still gonna work your ass off to get that 11th or 10th knot in there, but it can be done by pulling the paracord tight.

The rest should be pretty self explanatory, but ya'll are still having trouble, then I'll do a full wrap on video so you can see what's up.

So, all I ask, is that you tape up the blade, or post up the pics of your ultimate stupidity. I'm happy either way.

Great informative post. x2 on taping the blade. I got bit a few years ago when I was wrapping a new Izula. It was in the sheath and I was finishing up the end of the handle. Pulling it tight, and the blade popped loose from the sheath and sliced my middle and index finger pretty bad. They thought I hit an artery in my middle finger because it took hours to stop bleeding, and 7 stitches. Now, I tape the blades and use pliers to tighten the paracord near the end of the wrap to lessen the risk of getting sliced.

Listen to Moose TAPE THE BLADE!!!

Great tutorial...

Instead of taping the blade I just leave the sheath on this also gives you a good guide as to where to start the cord wrap at. I've started too high before and had to redo the whole knife because it wouldn't go in the sheath

I second the taping of the blade. I tried just leaving the blade in it's sheath while I wrapped the handle and that SOB popped right out and cut the s&^* out of my finger.
Thanks for the tutorial, i haven't wrapped mine like that before.

Wow. Two good threads in two days. Three more quality threads makes you eligible for BeckerHead status.

:D

Good to see you posting again, Moose.

Post up some pics of the injury. Sheath won't protect you on this one, even after market or custom.

Tape it and put it back in the sheath. But tape it..... trust me and the others that have cut the hell outta their hand, tape the blade.

I ran my luck through an Izula, and scraped by. My second BK14 bit my ring finger on my left hand.............

Great tutorial! Thanks for sharing! It would seem to be comfortable but I think I would still prefer the factory handles because of their easiness to clean up when you get them dirty cooking or what not. Regardless, nice tutorial!

The only necker bite I've gotten was from my 14, and that was my thumb AT the gathering... Talk about feeling like an idiot. Carried my sheath blade up instead of blade down for some stupid reason and took a nice bite out of my thumb.

Like the braid though! Next time you're on JungleTraining, check out the MTM braid Moose. I think you might like that one too.

When I wrapped up the handle on my 14, I put it in the sheath and figured it would be alright. Halfway through the wrap I tugged on the handle wrong and my hand whipped the sheath right off as my hand slid down onto the blade. By sheer luck I didn't get cut, but the edge lifted a hair-thin layer of skin right off my palm. No blood or anything, but if my hand had been closed any tighter I'd have been in trouble. Thank God I didn't convex the edge before I wrapped it.

Moose is right. Taping the blade when doing things with the knife is essential, even if you think you're in total control.
