I like my Benchmade 520a so much that I think I might get a 520 also. Just curious how the 154cm will compare to the Benchmades I have in D2, M2 and s30v?

You can't go wrong with BM 154CM; the heat treat and edge retention is superior to most while still maintaining excellent toughness. D2, M2 and S30V are all premium steels but you'll find that getting an edge on BM' 154CM will be a bit easier than D2 and M2 or even S30V from my experience. In comparison 154CM has just as much to offer as the above listed steels, including stain resistance. That’s what’s good about BM is there's so many good quality steels to choose from. Like Burger King say’s “ Have it your way” :D

well, it's probably not really directly comparable to their D2 and M2. softer, easier to sharpen and much better stain/rust resistance I guess.

but it holds up pretty well compared to their s30v you think?

I like it alot on my 735 ARES, BTW isn't 154CM the same as ATS-34?

Just different names in the U.S. (154CM) and Japan (ATS-34).

IMO 154CM is not too far below S30V, don't get me wrong S30V is an excellent quality steel but 154CM has had a pretty good track record id say.

154CM and ATS-34 are almost identical in elements but ATS-34 is made by the Hitachi corp. in Japan and 154CM is made by Crucible in the U.S.

I've had a BM 721 for four years, and a BM 705 for two years, both in 154CM. Both take and hold a nice edge. They seem to develop just a slight bit of oxidation (barely noticable patina; no pitting.) I also have several folders in D2 (Queen, not BM), and while I don't have any complaints about the edge holding qualities, they do have a tendency to pit badly, even if oiled, in a sweaty pocket.

I'll second that, as much as I hate to say it, I have found I hardly ever carry any of my Queen D2 stuff anymore, because it's almost impossible to keep it from pitting.

I like it, I have an old 721 in it and also a 710, great steel. I strop it up on leahter and never have to take it to a stone. Holds a good edge.

I have a number of Benchmade knives in 154CM. My EDC is a BM 940. It takes and holds a great edge, no complaints. I also have a BM140, 220, 310, 735, 773BC1, 941 and an 830 Ascent in ATS34. I have no complaints with 154CM.
