I have never used this steel in the Benchmade form. I have a mini-presidio ultra in the mail that I got a great deal on, and am wondering how this steel will hold up. I know 440C is a good steel when done correctly, so I figure BM knows how to do it right. I am most familiar with VG-10 and AUS-8, so that would be my base for comparison. Also, how does the axis lock hold up to hard use? Looks pretty strong from what I have read. Thanks for the replies ahead of time.

440c has been around for many years. Good old standby blade-steel. VG-10 is much better in edge retention, IMO. AUS-8 takes a fine edge and is easy to sharpen; loses its edge rather quickly...usually found in cheaper blades.
I see that Jim Ankerson, who is justifiably famous here for his rope-cutting/cardboard testing, has all three of these steels in Group 7. He would know.
Study this link...if edge retention is of primary importance to you in a knife.

Personally I find that Benchmade runs their 440C on the frustratingly glassy side.

I don't know personally but I have read tons of opinions of people stating its very similar to 8Cr13MoV around the forums.
