I've got both the ODA and the R1 and must say that the R-1 is a very nice knife especially when you can pick one up for under a buck fifty($150USD) from a discounter. The ODA however, even for the sixty dollars the same discounter asks for, is not worth it. The 420 is soft and incorrigable. The knife does come out of the box extremely sharp, but it does so by having a very thinly ground edge. The knife loses it's edge very quickly and requires frequent sharpening. Although I'm not a fan of Kraton or Rubber handles. Whatever nice features ther handle has, is lost with its' very pathetic rubber handguards. The only good point is that the 420 steel excellent as far as 420 goes and is very good for those who are in and out of salt water frequently. The knife steel and construction far surpasses many production diving knives I've encountered.
Bottom line is AUS 8, although not my favorite, serves very well in the Cold Steel R-1
