How is it that you came to find the perfect SAk/SAK combo

I enjoy reading all of the “Best SAK” threads, so I thought I’d start one myself. I bought my first Swiss Army knife a couple of years ago, and I’ve been addicted ever since. I probably should have just bought a custom SAK, and been done with it, but because I stayed with factory production I ended up buying a bunch ofdifferent models in order to get the tools I desired most. During this time I’ve developed some strong “likes” which have become standard, desirable features on the SAKs that I purchase. One of those is the in-line Phillips screwdriver. I also like the magnifying glass that comes as part of the layer with the in-line driver. To add to that list, I’ve really taken a liking to the older models with the longer in-line driver, and the gray plastic, glass lens magnifying glasses. This layer on the older models have a much more snappy feel to them that matches the rest of the knife, while the newer models are gritty with no snap, and although the glass isn't as good for reading, it does a better job of showing finer details. The other feature that I’ve really come to desire on my SAKs are the “Plus” scales, as I like having the pen, the mini driver, and stick pin, all of which I use much more than I thought I would. As a result, “Plus” models are now a standard for me.

So through this process I’ve finally settled on what I think are the 3 Best SAKs for me (and hopefully now that I found them, I’ll stop buying a SAK a week). They are the Explorer Plus, the Champion Plus, and the Swisschamp. I like the Explorer Plus as an EDC pocket knife. When I think I may need more tools, I like the Swisschamp in a belt pouch. The Swisschamp does everything for me that a regular multitool would do (minus the heavy duty pliers), plus it has the extras not found in the average multitool. Finally, I’ve been looking for a Champion Plus for an in between, I hadn’t been able to find an older model with the older magnifying glass. That was until earlier this week when I found a new Champion Plus in the older style being sold from a collection on Ebay in NIB condition. I was happy to pay $26 for it. It arrived today, and that completed my quest for the perfect SAK trio with all of the features I like best. I was so excited to find the older model Champion Plus (I wasn’t even sure they had been made prior to the new magnifying glass change), that I thought I’d share my excitement, and see if anyone else has refined their SAK likes and dislikes to the point that they think they’ve found the perfect SAK, or perfect SAK combo.

I still buy SAKs,but not as much as I did years ago. Every few months I snag one. Usually a small one. But over the past year or so I went from one Swiss Champ to three. And although I edc a Swisschamp, I've grown fond of Pioneers and Farmers. Now I own several of each. And then there are wegner evogrips, now I own a few of those...Thankfully,SAKs aren't as expensive as some knives are.

I edc a Swisschamp and I'm thinking of buying a Cybertool 29 to carry along with it.
The Champ has almost everything I need except the bit drivers which ,the Cybertool 29 would give me in a small package.

Thankfully,SAKs aren't as expensive as some knives are.

That's for sure. I didn't pay more than $30 for any of the knives pictured below. I think the Explorer Plus was $29, the Swisschamp was $25, and the Champion Plus $26.60. All from Ebay, and all NIB. Those prices are hard to beat for the quality.

Thanks for the responses.

I also like SAK's a lot, high quality for relative low prices. Most of mine are small, the largest I have is the Huntsman and about a third of my SAK collection are alox models. I have used a Soldier for many years as my only SAK. Later I tried out different models, like Farmer and Electrician Plus, and also the 111mm models. For me, the 111mm models are too big for EDC, but they are great for outdoor activities. I have the New Soldier, Nomad and the Centurion of the Dutch army. I like them, they have the traditional SAK tools, but just a bit larger.

For EDC I am developing a preference for the Climber. I tried the Spartan for a while as EDC, but when I am working on the land, I regularly carry a Huntsman with me. After going back to the Spartan, I miss the scissors. So I went looking for a Spartan with scissors and then found the Climber.

I rarely carry more than one SAK with me as EDC and I never tried out SAK combo's, but that is also because I don't need very much tools in daily life. In some situations I carry a SAK and an other kind of knife with me. When working on the land or when camping, I have a main blade and a SAK for the tools and small pocket knife tasks.

I have come to prefer one with pliers. This has probably something to do with years of carrying LM Wave, then LM Juice S2, then LM Squirt P4. My ideal office EDC SAK doesn't exist, because it consists of large blade, combo tool (can opener/cap lifter/flat screwdriver/wire stripper), pliers, and backspring phillips screwdriver. Someday I'll combine a Mechanic with a Compact to create this thing.

You might want to know that this SAK does exist. look at post one in this thread; http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=644031

Not part of the standard Vic range but you might be able to hunt one down, I've heard it called the Techline Compact before but I don't know if that's its real name.

Back on topic. I too like the in-line Phillips although I prefer the new mag (each to their own though). I've made myself a Scientist, a Yeoman and a Passenger (Explorer but no scissors) for my brother. I also have a Swiss Champ and a vintage Champion.

Doug, I'm wondering about you Champion. Is it a vintage Champion (fluted corkscrew, no hook maybe no chisel) or is it really a newer one but with the old style mag? I'm just curious as I didn't know the Champion had been done with plus scales and the old magnifier. Either way its a great SAK isn't it. :D

You're right!

After a quick google, I found out that it was a co-brand with Radio Shack "Techline", and it has been discontinued many years back. Crap.

Back to Mechanic-Compact Frankenstein plan.

Those Techlines turn up on eBay once in a while. They're never identified as such, you have to look. you may look at thousands before you finally spot one. Takes real dedication.

The search for the perfect SAK is like the search for the Holy Grail. At least for me, I'm still looking. That's half the fun though.

I like the Explorer Plus as an EDC pocket knife.

Same here. I have tried not carrying a SAK, or switching to something like the Farmer, but I find myself regularly using the inline phillips (which for me is way better than the one that flips out 90 degrees), tweezer and magnifier. Would like an Explorer Plus that includes a saw, but there is no current production model with those features. For $30, its hard to beat an Explorer Plus IMO.

I still carry a folder for quick deployment.

I would like a saw on an Explorer also. Although, it's a little bigger than I'd like, this the reason I purchased the Champion Plus. I like the file also, but wouldn't mind getting rid of the fish scaler (although) I found the ruler on it helpful the other day.

Practical daily experience as to what I needed, in the thinnest possible package. Then I had a "custom Vic" made which is basically a Yeoman with pliers and a long nail file. Use it everyday.

My first SAK order was for a Hunstman, a Compact, and a Cybertool (the smallest one, I forgot the number), and soon after I picked up a Farmer. I was convinced by other people that I needed a saw for an edc. What I figured out was that
1. I never use the little saw.
2. The phillips screwdriver that comes out the back is crap
3. Cybertool has the wrong tools for taking a knife apart
4. I like the tweezers

I gave the huntsman to my brother and got rid of the rest. I then got an Explorer, which I find is the best edc for people in office/school type of enviroment. The Explorer has replaced all my little tools at my desk.

I also got some more alox models but dont like the lack of tweezers.

I recently picked up a OHT and a Rambler for my keychain. I think the rambler is a great companion to an edc folder. The OHT doesnt do much for me. It might work as a minimalist outdoor tool, but I like hatchet/mora/swisstool spirit combination more.

so my ideal combos are like this:
Rambler + knife for edc
Explorer in home office for all office needs
Swisstool spirit as my outdoor multitool

I came to find the perfect SAKs for me by buying many of them over the years. They were cheap enough - and I have had fun gifting or giving some of the less desirable models away.

I edc the Climber 7 days a week along with a folder. On occasion, I will swap it out for the Huntsman.

During the weekends I may have either the Champ or the Champ XLT on me. I really like the XLT as it has the driver and bits and a few more blades than the standard. If you belt carry you hardly notice its there.

I like the Alox models and own a few - but I really miss the scissors, tweezers, pin and toothpick features.

If they could figure out how to add scissors and the handle gear to the Farmer I would be set.

I personaly have narrowed the perfect SAK for me down to the following
1. Yeoman (I have 4 of them)
2. Explorer Plus
3. Champion Plus
4. Swisschamp
5. Outrider
6. Soldier
7. Tinker (all versions)
8. Climber
9. Spartan

When ever I see one that I don't already have, I buy it and carry it for a while. After a while I can tell if it's going to go in to my "Collection Box" or if it's going to go in to rotation. Even if it goes into the "Collection Box" it gets some carry time, but not as offen as my regular line up.

Picked up a Trekker last year and just got a U.S.A flag scaled Super Tinker for urban carry, really like them both. Thinking about a sentinal now.
