How are the Lansky sharpening tools. I saw one on amazon for about $30. I had a sharp maker but didn't like it, so I'm looking for something else.

Any recommendations are appreciated.

Thanks.

I use the GATCO which is similar in use to the Lansky. There are several rod guided systems out there.

The GATCO is easy to use, affordable, provides a variety of angles, offers a variety of hones.

It works great for me as I am sure the Lansky would as well.

Versus the Lansky the GATCO is a bit cheaper and provides for more angle options.

Good Luck

Im not the pro at sharpening but with lansky u can get mirror polished hair whittling edges. At first ur gonna piss of like everyone but results are good.I have the 5 honed version of it.Its pretty darn good. But i suggest some xcoarse diamond hones for heavy reprofiling.
Also some little tips from me;
Tape the metal rod side of hone in case u slip the stone from blade its not gonna hit edge and damage it.
Go fast but with little strokes and little pressure.
Be carefull at tip,i slip a lot first times, still do:D
Use the sharpie trick to find correct angle.
Check after every stone for burr and bad spots, prefefarably under some microscope or magnifiying glass.(I use 75 x microscope)

I too am a fan of the Lansky system. But I've never used anything but benchstones and the free hand method getting varied but useful results.
Learning how to use the system is easy but developing the skill and experience to get a great edge does take time...like any other skill.
I started with the Arkansas stone system but it takes a long time for harder steels. I added the diamond medium and fine hones to the system and absolutely love them.

I'm a fan.

I make my own sharpner. I have a kershaw leek. I have had one the first day they sold them to the resalers and my sharpner is the only thing I have used it on the leek. it is so sharp I can shave my arm with it.
