How is the handle attached on the Condor Golok?

I would like to thin the handle and need to know if the pins are solid or peened or if they are some kind of rivet with a head. I just don't want to file through any type of head and weaken the attachment.

they are solid pins...at least mine are. I shaped the handle on mine a bit, and had no problems. I also did another one I gave to mtnfolkmike and they were solid as well.

Have one of the early versions with the blockier handles. I sanded it down so much it looks contoured around the rivets. Still does not feel that good. I'm thinking I might get some custom handles put on it.

I sanded over the peened heads, on accident on one of mine. It resulted in a loosening after a long time of hard use. I sent it to a maker to get a Micarta handle on it. Will post when I'm done. Try it, pay attention to the original head size and if you are taking a good amount of metal off, and if you do, you can probably either make a new one yourself or have a maker do it. I'm jonesing to see what mine turns out like.

Thanks Joezilla.
I'll watch about the peened heads. If I need to take a lot off I'll just sand and file around the pins and peen again.

Mostly I'm sanding in a little finger grove.I make a few knives so if I need to rehandle it's no problem.

Did anyone ever rehandle the Golok. I just got a few of the Condo parangs. I think I will leave one with the wood. It needs some sanding and smoothing that is about it. The bolts stick out on one side probably a 1/32 of an inch but enough to snag your hand. I think I will try making some micarta scales for the other. I dont know if starting with a block and notching for the tang so I can have a big butt would be best or just leaving the scales bulky on the bottom. This will be my first micarta project.
