How is your BM BT2 coating holding up?

I'M THINKING OF BUYING A BM 730CFHS. Sweet knife, D2 blade, Carbon Fiber handle, BUT----it has the infamous BT2 coating. This is a fairly expensive knife, and I don't want it to look beat up.

Whats your experience with this coating?

Regards

Mike

Depends on wether u use it or collect it. Even satin finish blades mars if u use it.

But, the coating sucks (YMMV) I got the BM750bt, after using it to cut some table laminate( name escapes me at the moment) the coating are beatup. Slight chips on blade bevel, steel showing on corners, scratches all over the blade coating. You could leave it on a canteen table and not have it stolen.

After six months of being my "using knife" the BT2 coating on my BM940SBT is still in great shape. Up close there are parallel rows of surface scratches, especially over the serrated portion of the blade. There are a few light scratches at the tip. None of them go all the way through the coating and the knife does not look "beat up". Here is a picture.

I've got a miniAFCK that is about 6 years old. It's been a heavy user, and the coating is still amazingly intact. I've cut all sorts of things, so naturally it's scratched in places, but there is surprisingly little actual 'wear' on the coating. Only at the corners and high points on the grind lines has the coating begun to thin a bit....

It'll show signs of wear, but it will still remain fairly rust-resistant. The cosmetics will suffer a bit.

If you can grab a 730CFHS I would do so ASAP. It's a great knife either as a user or for a collection. Go for it.;) ;)

BT2 is the absolute pits. I have several 'Mades here that are BT2 coated and every one of them is scratched up from use. One even has small chunks of coating missing from near the cutting edge  Benchmade needs to get rid of it and use boron carbide all the way!!

BT2 will not hold up to heavy use.
My 710HS before boron carbide, and my 710HS after boron carbide.
I was cutting open large bags of abrasive material. The finish damage in the "before" scan was done in one day's work.
Hopefully I will have the opportunity to do the same tasks with the BC coated blade one day, and see how it stands up.
My Nimravus no longer has its BT2, either, since I sanded it after most of the finish had worn off.

Here's my Nimravus after 14 months of use. Mainly cut cardboard and used few times for food prep. In short not good at all. I've sent it to bodycote for recoating.

I picked up a Nimravus Cub last year at a gun show.
Used it for hardly nothing, and after that one day, the finish was scratched to an ugly level.
Within two weeks, it'd gotten to looking like it was two years old an abused, when it wasnt, so I polished the blade to about 400 grit satin... looked ten times better.
I, personally, dont like BT2 at all!:barf:
