How is your D3V holding up against patina/corrosion?

I've heard that CPK's particular flavor of D3V is just a bit more stainless than regular 3V. I want to put my new EDC into a hunting use role, and I wash my hunting knives often and meticulously after each use, so I'm a bit concerned about putting a non-stainless blade into this type of role. I don't want to scar my precious.

Thoughts? Oiling recommendations? Stop whining and just get a second one in MC?

Thanks.

I probably put my field knife through harsher hunting conditions than most. Never had a problem with 3V despite numerous trips in the salt.

No oil. I just wipe it down when I get back or when I remember.

Great info. Thanks!

With care as you described you may not even notice a patina. I've used an EDC for everything imaginable including hunting and other than a few scratches it looks much as it did when I got it.

I skin and gutted a deer couple months back. I unsheathed it a couple of weeks later and it still had some blood and a crap on it. Cleaned it off and no patina.

I’m trying to cut back my screen time so I’m not posting as much lately but I use my EDC all the time on various things and haven’t had any issues with rust and no patina (unfortunately)

Used a FK2 and also a DEK 1, both in 3V, for two deer seasons. Skinned 9 deer, processed 4 of those. All I do is wash them off with dish soap and then apply some cooking oil of the month, usually olive oil. I coat the blades after I have dried them off and then back in the hunting storage bin. They do get out for pics now and again and I recoat with oil if needed.

Still look the same as when I got them. The FK2 I got second hand and it came to me as a user. Not sure how previous owner took care of it but its looks still haven’t changed.

NE Oklahoma weather for reference. Cold dry winters, very hot summers.

I have wet molded HUNDREDS of sheaths, where the knife is stuffed into a soaking wet leather sheath that is then molded to the outline of the knife and left to sit for anywhere from 15-20 minutes. (Longer if I forget and go to bed.. been known to happen) Pull it out and do it again, all day. All they get is wiped down dry.

I also live in central Florida and use them regularly.

They do get a very faint patina that to me almost looks like a light acid wash but I have not seen any rust, even under the scales.

I have had plenty of stainless steel not hold up to the same treatment, ATS34 and CTS XHP are prime examples.

Don’t bother with Magnacut. If it’s your first CPK it has to be D3V in my opinion. Anything else is like going to Five Guys and ordering a chicken sandwich. I’m sure it a good chicken sandwich, but they are there because of their burgers.

I agree, D3V is something to marvel at!

No problem on the blades, but a few of mine have patina\rust under the scales. It's not bad just surface stuff. I live in the PNW and hike in the rain and such for days at a time, so probably not your standard use case. My one 4v blade has really cool patina all over it, but nothing like regular carbon steel.

When I receive a new CPK, I remove the scales and apply a liberal amount of Marine Tuff Glide to the steel underneath, making sure to coat the inside surfaces of the cutouts too. Then I reapply the scales and loktite the screws. Haven’t had any rust underneath my handles doing this.

This spot on my UF2 (which I beat like a rented mule) is the only spot of corrosion I've seen on any of my D3V knives. I noticed this after the UF2 had been put away wet after a rainy camping trip then forgotten about in the car for a couple weeks.
My D2 skinner also has a slight patina after cutting meat and veggies. (I'll add pic later)

I love this knife so much
