The picture shows a completely original dagger, which was made up of a flint blade and a ashwood handle, found near by a ice-mummy (called the “Ötzi”) in a high-alpine region of Tyrol (Europe) in the year 1991. Estimated age circa 3350 – 3100 BC.

Wow, it's amazing that the material held up for so long and in such good condition. I guess it was a good investment...wonder if it came in a folder.
:D
FM.

The proportions look vaguely Scandinavian, with that short, strong blade and a long handle for control of it. As I understand it, Ötzi was pretty well equipped for his hike, but he had been wounded before setting out. His culture was fairly technologically sophisticated.

Do you know if we have identified him with the ancestry of any modern people?

Thanks for that pic Horus. THis community sure does a great job of educating its members.

Thanks for posting that Horus. I read a book on the Iceman and saw the TV special but I guess some other facts have come to light since then. It is my understanding that he was murdered but that the officials in charge of the body wouldn't allow enough access to it to determine this until fairly recently. The artifacts that he had with him were quite interesting and it's great to see a clear picture of his knife here.

Esav Benjamin,

I know that DNA extractions has been carried out but I didn’t found any information regarding the phylogenetic origin of the ice-mummy. On the basis of anthropologic comparative-data the Iceman presumably was a member of the “Remedello” culture.

Thanks for posting that Horus. Very cool!
