a year ago my kiddo was getting into bushcraft and wanted a hatchet so I gave him mine. The search for a new one led to the discovery of Norlunds and vintage axes in general. It was on! And a deep exploration into the history of axes and the golden age of axes in America ensued.

This coupled with my compulsive and competitive nature, combined with an inexorable need to have stuff that is cooler than my friends, has led several dozen new axes and increased insurance premiums in a relatively short period of time.

But it all started with this one!

I went to an estate sale hoping to find a Voyageur and to my disbelief I found the perfect rusty old Norlund hung on a beat up hammer handle for $25!
This would become my very first metal polishing, first attempt to carve a handle or do leathercraft. But I threw myself headlong into it with intentions to make a little pack hatchet. I wanted it to be very small for the belt and to my surprise was able to execute my vision! Although I have come a long way in the short time since I did this one, I am still quite pleased with the results of me first restoration.

Compared to a stock Norlund and the belt hatchet I gave my kid.
