How long a wait do the makers have?

Just curious about such things, how long a wait do the various makers have (esp the ones that happen to frequent this forum!)? I believe there are some makers that don't really take orders, they make something and put up the fruits of that labor, so they sort of don't have a waiting list and others have varying degrees of customization and so to get yourself something specific you do need to be on a list if there's a wait..

Just curious! Thanks.

You are going to find that makers have waiting lists that vary from almost immediately to many years. I have dealt with makers that tell me around a month to those that are up around 7 years and everything in-between.

Edited to correct a typo.

A knifemaker's wait... As a customer, I can tell you that it varies on a new knife from an exactly as promised 2 months to a "I'm sure I'll have it by Thanksgiving" (and I didn't ask him which one...that was 1999 and I am still waiting...hey, it was 200$ down on a 1250$ knife...I just wished I had put more down and I wouldn't have lost so much of it on stocks!!).

Fortuantely, I am very patient. I just email the 4 makers I am still waiting on every few months. I just hope I can avoid sounding overanxious or impatient.
:D
I did cancel one order for a 2000$ knife after a year and it had just been started (3 month original delivery estimate). Fortunately, it was a situation where the maker was way overbooked and my order just became someone else's and I got my deposit back.

At present, I only have one knife that was ordered in 1999 still to be done. All of these makers are pretty well known and my only frustraton is that I do know they are working hard on knives for coming shows. If I didn't know better, it would almost seem that the next speculative sale has a higher priority than the bird in the hand.

hmm ... delivery time ..
immediate ...
that is, as soon as someone actually calls me up and actually wants me to make their blade .. then i will get right on it ...

now i just have to wait for someone to call ...
...anyday now..

:D

oh well, early days and all.

D.

Varies from compeated knives in stock. To knives just about compleated to total customs that take 3 to 4 months depending on the time of year and existing back log.

I really enjoy hearing about this. It is very interesting - of the knives I have on order the longest is a year wait, and I can't imagine having to wait longer. I can barely imagine what next week is going to be like. :)

I was thinking that in awhile I'd like to make a foray into the folder world, have a couple makers on the short list but if their waits are long I guess I should start investigating now.

Chuck, I am already going to order a bali from you (the li'l around 3 incher). :)

I hope to get a custom Emerson CQ-C7 sometime before I die. I ordered it in 1996 I believe, and I put down a deposit for $25. The lead time was quoted as approximately 1 year. Emerson had a booth at a gunshow I went to in 1998, and they said that I should have my knife "soon". Everyone says that Ernie is an upfront, nice guy, but I beg to differ.

I'm still waiting for my first custom to get made. The original estimate was six months, but I know the maker(Keith Coleman) was ill for a couple of weeks so I'm sure it will probably take another month or so for him to catch up.
