How long are collaboration agreements made for?

I know for example that several manufacturers have made Applegate/Fairbairn combat models, folders and Smachets - Mad Dog, Al Mar, Gerber, Boker, Blackjack in this case.
Is there a "standard" time frame that is renewed (or not) by mutual agreement?
Are there considerations involved such as quality control, design changes of varying degrees?
