How long will it be before my new Microtech UDT wears out? I open it about 50 times a day.

My guess is that the spring is gonna fail real soon. Probably tommorow.

This is probably a case of 'use it and lose it'. Does UDT stand for Ugly Darn Thing?

Paracelsus, observing that indulgence of compulsions and irresistable urges often causes pain and heartbreak, and can be expensive as well. Especially when nobody gets the joke.

I already registed at MicroHolics.com, but forgot about it.

I asked the question there too now. Hopefully Paracelsus's joke isn't the truth.

my son has had one for about 3 months and pretty much constantly opens his....he will sit in front of his computer for 10 hours at a time and continuously opens and closes it....no failure yet.

Burke, I was lying. I actually open it at least 150 times everyday. I sit in front of the computer for a couple hours and then randomly pick it up and snap it open.

I once had a Benchmade Mini Reflex. I must of opened that thing nine hundred or a thousand times a day. No joke. It lasted for about five months before the spring failed. Remember however that the mini reflex has a smaller and weaker spring than a larger auto. Under normal use I would guess it should last for years. No sweat though you can buy new springs and install them yourself easily. You can get them from Pioneer Valley Knife And Tool. Just take a look around at pvknife.com Later, Jeff

Ferret, it's an auto.

Doesn't hurt my thumb at all. Spyderco and other hole opener knives do hurt though, since I cut the tip of my thumb off and it's still sore even after the skin grew back. A peculiar thing, because most studs and disk openers don't hurt, just holes.

Wow... I hardly ever cycle my MTs. I think the Kestrel has been cycled _maybe_ 50 times in the 3 months that I've owned it, mostly by guests that I show it off to. I just dread the day my Mini Socom spring breaks, though. I know that aftermarket Kestrel springs are easy to get (PVKT), but I've yet to see Mini Socom springs anywhere. Does anyone know if the new UDT model will take existing L-UDT/M-UDT aftermarket springs?

And I though *I* was the only one! I have often wondered this same thing myself, but was too embarassed to ask. I actually force myself not to open my auto's too often because I am afraid of them wearing out.

My wife thinks I'm crazy! "Why do you open that *thing* up all of the time when you are not going to cut anything!" I, as of yet, have found no sane way to explain it to her. I guess it is something that we understand, but is very hard to explain to others.

And this is not just for autos. I open all of my one handers frequently (daily carries) just, well, because.

Now that this subject has been brought up, is everyone else out there like me. See, I don't personally know anybody, except for myself, who has this knife obsession. Someday I hope to meet in the flesh someone who enjoys knives like I do.

Ok, now for the most stupid question of all: I have never been to a knife show. I am guessing that perhaps there may be knife dealers at gun shows. Is this true? Becuase there is a gun show this weekend in my city. I am not into guns, and have never been to a show. I would hate to go and pay to get in, only to find out there are no knives there.

I've only once been to a small gun show, but there were plenty of knives there too. Some of them were actually pretty good (spyderco).

Chang-man you got nothing to worry about...

Who cares how long you can snap it before the spring gives, they're easy to replace. So don't let that stop you from thwacking that baby as much as you please...

Or, if you're really worried, you can send it to me and I'll just break the spring and replace it for you...
