How long between pick-ups? Direction of your collection...

I'm just wondering what the average interval between pick-ups is for people on here between CRK to CRK (I'm implying a purchase of several hundred $$), compared to my pace!

For me, about as soon as I get my new Sebby in, clean it up, and put it in my display, I am about ready to search for my next one, ideally waiting 1-2 weeks before pulling the trigger. Right now, I have 4 in about 8 weeks.

It's more than my wallet can tolerate!

And about the direction of your collection...

Certainly as the collection grows, the list of new desires is reduced right?

As your preferences change as your knowledge grows, do you find you sell off pieces you acquired early on to fund your continued purchasing, or do you continue to just consume?

I'm kinda thinking 1 more soon to give me the raindrop damascus, as I already have both ladder and spirograph. I figured that would carry me over till the 25's start, at which point I hope to see even a cool new laynard style etc to differentiate between what I have and the new generation, but I have seen some 21's recently with awesome new lanyards with beads etc, and so many great uniques, I think I could just keep purchasing them.

But I can't! IMHO following the design evolution of Lisa allows a nearly endless purchasing plan.

Maybe I just need some firm ground rules here to slow my pace!

What are some rules you have implemented to keep things in control?

Thanks everyone!

My knife collection isn't constrained to only CRK, but what I do is kind of similar to you where I buy often within a short amount of time. I have a "grail list" of knives that I purchase as soon as I find it or whenever it becomes available. Once I'm close to checking off the list completely I slow down drastically in knife purchases.

I've done that for two consecutive years now and it works for me. The thing that really keeps me in check is to only buy knives that I consider to be a "grail". There are a bajillion knives out there that I really like, but if I bought all of them I would have so many knives I would turn into a hoarder.

I want to be a collector, not a hoarder. So all of those cool $50-150 knives that I am itching to get for the heck of it will probably never be purchased.

I bought a Sebenza about 10-12 years ago, and an Umnumzaan this week. So I'm at a pretty slow pace I'd say, at least as far as CRK goes.

I have a list taped onto my computer that says "ONLY Buy LIST!!! RESIST ALL OTHERS"

Sadly I haven't resisted all others, but it does keep me mindful of what I really do want, and it has slowed down my impulsivity.

I recently purchased a few wonderful CRKs that I dearly love and they all seemed to show up within a one month period and that hurt the budget, but it was either buy them or pass them by and not know when the chance would come again.

I do sell some to buy some....but I wish I could hoard them all.

Good luck in resisting, it is hard to do.

I'm down to buying one CRK every 12 months or so. And I'll edc that knife until I pick up the next one the following year.
Gives me a chance to really enjoy and appreciate the knife.
Right now I'm currently carrying the Umnumzaan and my next purchase this winter will be the 25.
I'm definitely more of a user then Iam a collector these days.

There is no hope for me. First thing I do every morning is check my long list of knife sites for something that catches my eye!! So the interval could be long or short, depending on how much cash I have available! Life is short and I have already lived longer than I ever thought I would have .... so why not enjoy it!

What a great thread - many of us feel your pain, trust me. It's a slippery slope once you get started! I find that I go in waves - I'll buy several within a few days or a week and then several weeks or even months will go by with nothing. I've sold some things, no CRK though - still accumulating. It helps that I'm sort of picky about what I like. But what really keeps me in check is NOT checking the sites all that often. There is a direct correlation between how much I check and how much I buy. If I look, I will eventually buy. If I stop looking for a while, I don't. So I guess it comes down to resisting the urge to look. But I'll tell ya...CRK is what got me started on this slippery slope in the first place...damn you CRK!!! I love you! Damn you! I love you! Damn you!...

Hahaha, I love this post^.
My sentiments exactly

I just buy what I like when I see it, I have gone months with out spending a penny on knives to spending several thousand dollars in a day (Not including the Blade show :p) I don't really collect production knives any more and really only buy hand made knives from makers I feel deserve my support and make the sort of knives I want. I do seem to have rather more CRKs than I can use though so I do have a collection, it's just not an official one. :D

CRK = crack for me!

I bought my first large 21 Serrated 14 months ago, then with in a month I had to have a back up in case my main edc went down. Then I had to have a small, then some fixed and then some unique.

To date, I have realized what I like more and more and that means getting rid of a few that I didn't use for more like I love EDCing.

Following Exeter354 policy of not checking out the sites definitely helps me. But one trip here to Blade forums and looking at anything ever posted by Lisantica and I am looking again. Once you go down this path it is hard to go back.

I am waiting for one of the numbered 25s to come in next week and a Lisa's original. This after receiving a Large dog paw about three weeks ago.

I figure if I throw my laptop out of the car on the highway it will save me money for a while.

Good luck, really believe this forum needs a CRK Support group.

I started to collect CRK last Spring, maybe around April. I only had purchased BM and Lone Wolf prior as they were readily available because I lived about 3 hours away from where they were both manufactured. Then I was in Boise and visited Chris' shop...had just ordered a fairly expensive gold class BM and before I knew it I was picking up the Zaan from Chris himself. Well it has been about 1 1/3 years since the Zaan and I now have a Ti-Lock, Large 21, Small 21, Large Insingo, SnakeWood Mnandi and a newly purchased Umfaan. My wife also picked up a Neil Roberts Warrior knife for me, not really into fixed blades but at least its a CRK. Along with these I have picked up two discontinued BM Mini Skirmishes, a BM 42-101 and a LionSteel SR-1B.

Gotta get rid of this bug but it is definately the hardest to shake! No medicine works on it!

CRK probably average 1 per year for me, I may not buy anymore but we will see if a 25 speaks to me, or if he carries another intriguing damascus. I have a lot of 50-150$ knives, Spyderco, Kershaw, Buck etc. I never carry a CRK at work. don't want to abuse one that bad (I work 7 days on, 7 days off) I like a sharp knife so if I abuse my BM for example (maybe scraping gaskets off a metal flange) I will grab another knife for the next day and sharpen my knives on my week off.
