How long do you take?

Those first blades took forever. The more I make the faster I get (and better looking the job). The art seems to be knowing when you can go fast and where to take the time.

I'm profiling a blade now in what feels like 15 minutes; using a hacksaw and 60 grit belt. The last flat grind I did (on a 4" hunter) went really quick.

The question is for you stock removal types:

Just how much time do you spend from a blank piece of steel up to heat treat?

I'm not looking to go fast myself or race thru a job. It just seems that a good job of roughing it out doesn't take as long as I thought.

Seeing As I don't make many fixed blade anymore I can't say but a folder blade takes me about 20 min if I have the design drawn up. Profile, drill & ream the pivot hole, drill the thumbstud hole. Grind the bevels up to 180 nor 220 and into the oven it goes. I have gotten very efficient in what I do. Good design and layout helps considerably.

They are taking longer now than even just a couple of years ago.
This is due to two reasons. The more I do, the more I can see mistakes and it is never just "good enough", it has to be "right".

The other reason is that the older I get the less time it seems I have FOR EVERYTHING!!!

I'm about the same as Bob on time from round bar to heat treat on a 10 inch Bowie. Then the work starts,It can take anywhere from 2 18 hour days to 3 weeks of 8-12 hour days to finish..I also cannot just settle on just OK as the more I do the more I see to do.

For a 8" Flat ground Bowie it takes me about 15 hours to get it ready for heat treat. But then I don't use any power tools. Maybe it's time to sell the Jeep and get my power tool priorities straight.
