How long do you wait for someone to pay after completing the knife they custom ordered???

I have never had a problem with prompt payment from a customer until now.

So I'm asking advice, I'm not really sure what is the correct way to handle this situation is.

Thanks in advance for any input.

Wait until the money comes. :p Just kidding.

I would wait a week or two, and if there's no communication, sell it to someone else. Ya snooze ya lose.

There's one of my customers who almost never pays promptly. I don't whine too loudly because he's my most frequent customer (43 knives, he tells me) and I'm not very timely at making the knives. ;)

I have one that was ordered late last summer. The knife was finished mid-January this year, right on schedule. Several phone and emails later, still no money. The latest communication with the customer indicated that he was sending the money out early last week. Guess what....... No money and no further communication.

If something doesn't happen soon, I may have to share with our community this individual's name and how he stands up to his side of a "gentleman's agreement. Sure hope it doesn't come to that.

I'd probably wait a week or two, then sell it to someone else if you don't hear from him.

Does anyone ever charge a deposit for a custom oredred knife or all $ after the knifes complete?

only speaking for us, we don't ask for deposits on custom ordered knives of our design. If the customer backs out, it's petty easy to resell. We ask for payment once the knife is ready to ship.

I never charge a deposit. I only accept payment when the knife is complete.

I paid in full for a custom gun one time. It was the biggest mistake I ever made. The rifle was over a year late, and then when it finally came in, it wasn't even close to what I had ordered. I showed him the original email I sent when I ordered it, and he made good on some of things he did wrong, but not all of them. I'm very leery about paying for things up front, but I usually offer a down payment. The last knife I custom ordered, the maker told me he works faster when he knows he's going to get paid at the end. He says it gives him a reason to be in the shop.

I usually get a deposit if the knife I'm making is something that I can't sell if the buyer doesn't come through with the $ when due....ie wierd designs and/or materials that I know won't sell, or if it has someones name on it. Then I make known up front that I have to have 1/2 down and it's not a refundable deposit. Other than that, I don't take deposits. So far I have only been burned once or twice and I have been doing this since 1988. Sure, sometimes I have to pester someone about paying, but I can be a real pain in the ass if I want to be. LOL

Every time I have taken a deposit something happens to prevent me from finishing the knife on time. One took me 2 years to finally come through (unexpected military transfer). I no longer take deposits unless it is going to take some high end materials. I will however request a deposit from anyone who has backed out of a deal with me. I will work with them if they were honest about not having the money, but will request a 50% non refundable from now on. If they just wouldn't communicate me then I will not even entertain another commission. I have had a couple cancel on me the last few months but they were at least honest about not having the $$.
