How long for warranty turnaround?

Does anybody know how long the turnaround is for warranty work from Spyderco? Sent in a knife and it's been about a week since it was delivered and I haven't heard anything from them. I'd expect it to be around 2 weeks but not sure.

It varies. I'd say 2-3 weeks at the shop is "normal" turnaround, but can vary on both sides of that. You normally won't "hear anything", you'll just get your knife back, so even though it's still probably too soon, it could already be on its way back to you.

I am in the same boat - sent in a knife for consideration under warranty/repair and it arrived in Golden, CO, about a week ago. I was wondering when I would hear back of if I should call them.

Thanks for posting this. I was wondering about turnaround time myself this week. Your post and the responses of our fellow forumites have answered my questions about this. I'll just hang out and wait.

In my experience they're pretty fast. Mine was sent on 1/24 /10 and I got it back on 2/4/10. I didn't expect a quick turnaround due to SHOT but still under 2 weeks.

Yeah I thought they might just fix it and send it back without any contact. When I sent in my PS3, it just came back a week or 2 later.

I'm just a little anxious for it since I had it backordered for a while, then I got it, and only had it for 1 day and had to send it in. It's a Civilian so it's not my EDC and I don't need it too bad. I am just thinking it might take longer since it's made in Japan.

I bought a Rookie and got it two days ago. It is going to Spyderco in the mail later today. The place that sold it to me (new and unused by me) told me to send it to Spyderco.
So much for return policies.

What does their return policy state? Did they offer a refund or just tell you to send it to the manufacturer? What knife and what is wrong? If you don't feel like they treated you correctly start a post in The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly because I'm sure other knife consumers would want to hear how they perform when there is a problem.

It looks like there is a gouge or crack in the area of the blade where the lock bar drops. I sent a photo of the problem in with an email request for an exchange.

Their online "policy" states that returns are subject to a 5% stocking fee.
"OUR RETURN POLICY
We will accept any unused product in its original package for up to 30 days from the date of shipment. We will refund the full product amount minus a 5% restocking fee. Shipping and handling charges are non-refundable."

If I could, I'd post a photo - but I can't....don't have posting authority.

Well that makes it sound like they should take it back even though they don't state what happens if there is a defect. However, a reputable company would exchange it no questions asked and deal with the damaged knife on their end. I personally would like to know who it is so I know not to buy from them. If you don't mind starting a thread in The Good/Bad/Ugly subforum of the exchange section I'm sure others would like to know about it as well.

Also, if you upload the picture to a picture hosting site like photobucket.com you can then use the little "yellow mountain" button above the text box when posting a reply, and insert the picture location to have a picture show up in your post.

Am curious about that Rookie. I don't have posting authority either, but if you email me the pic, I can host it on my own site and post it here. (my forum name, without the space, @earthlink.net)

I Just sent the photo. In addition to the obvious problem, it looks as if there could be a crack in the blade at lockup as well. That one is small and hard to photograph.

Ok Arty, here's your photo. The area in question is still the same size, but I took the liberty of cropping the image down to the essential area as it was a bit big for forum posting. Assume it's the dark spot to the right of the relief cut in the lock notch that you believe to be a gouge or crack. Does kind of look like a bit of metal flaked off there.

That does look strange. Like Deacon said it looks like a chip or flake of metal came off.

However, that is pretty darn dirty for being 2 days old. I wonder if they could have sent you a knife that had been returned? Makes me question the company even more. That or you noticed it when it was 2 days old but have been carrying it since then for awhile?

It was in my pocket for a few hours and I then noticed the problem. There was nothing else in my pocket. I got the knife on Monday and emailed the vendor the next day - less than 24 hours later on tues. I sent it to Spyderco on Wed.
This is far less than the 30 day return window.
I have never seen anything like this on a knife blade. It never should have left the factory, and certainly shouldn't have been sold.
It was sold as new by an online vendor.
The knife wasn't used to cut anything - it didn't even touch a piece of paper.
My concern is that the knife will lose a section of the blade - and it could happen during use - then the lock won't hold. The metal could be brittle if there were a problem with the heat treatment - or if it had been abused by someone who returned it to the vendor.
But - it was sold to me as a new knife.

That really looks like a returned knife to me. The fact that the dealer refused to exchange the knife and referred you to the factory doesn't speak well of the merchant. :thumbdn:

Regardless, Spyderco will take good care of you.
