How long is the Delica Blade? Really?

What is the absolute overall length of the Delica blade when open? Maximum length that could be interpreted? Obviously the official length is 2 7/8".

For a work-permitted EDC I need to be under 3"...which 2 7/8" obviously is but I am not sure if my Human Resources person would measure the thing the same way that the Spyderco does. Can somebody lay a ruler on one and tell me basically how much steel protrudes from the handle? I would really appreciate it.

PS: I feel pretty lucky to work in a place that allows an EDC knife at all and to live in Indiana where knife laws are quite reasonable.

2 7/8" is how much comes out of the handle with a cutting edge of 2 9/16"

i work in an office in Pennsylvania and i've got a para2 clipped to my pocket. I don't think my job even has any knife rules.

The Delica 4 I am carrying today measures 2 7/8" from the middle of the blade protruding from the handle to the tip. As you know the handle curves and if one were to measure from at the top of the blade where the jimping is at an angle to the tip it would measure 3 1/8". That sounds like a ridiculous way to measure blade length, but given was has happened in NY regarding knife evaluation I could see that happening.

Well that is pretty good news. I think I could swing that. Thanks for taking the two measurements for me Brisket...that's what I need.

Most LEO will measure the length of steel from the top of the handle to the tip. Length of cutting edge seems to not matter as much. Silly, but that's how it goes.

If that is the standard then it is clearly over 3".

That is a bummer Q. what do you mean by "work-permitted EDC"? Your HR people actually make you do pocket dumps and measure your knife? What field do you work in? If my HR department did that, they would be on the phone to 911 in a second.

If they bother measuring at all, instead of just saying it "looks too big", most LEOs will measure blade length the same way Spyderco and all other knife companies I'm familiar with - from the forward-most point of the handle to the tip with the knife fully opened.

Most cops around my area are taught to measure the blade across their open palm, blade perpendicular to the fingers fully extended (if that makes sense). If it is longer than their open palm, they can claim it is too long. Had a buddy get a 3" blade taken from him by a cop... she was a female cop (smaller palms). Truly unlucky draw. Cops around here used to use a credit card lengthwise. Shorter than or equal to the credit card length was alright. Now they use their palm, which is garbage since it is highly dependent on the persons structure.

It seems every cop I encounter has a different measuring technique, but for the most part a Delica will be fine.

Oh gosh no. I'm in Healthcare. After 9/11 happened, Homeland Security very quietly mandated that hospital security guards be deputized and carry firearms. Before that, it was a radio and a can of mace. We hired off-duty LEOs to watch out in ER on weekend nights.

So now we have hospital employees who carry guns, we need a weapons policy. So we get one and now knives are covered. So we "subscribe" to a fairly common standard and say that you gotta keep your blade at or under 3". That is the extent of it. For working in the office I don't need anything longer than 2 15/16" so why not comply. Nobody ever searches anybody, no metal detectors, none of that.

Just trying to follow the rules. Some places are completely knife-free...none at all...ever. What good is carrying a knife if you can not use it...without getting a beef against you...or fired.

So that's all.

I bought a delica for this exact purpose a few months ago, something to carry for work..

Its so light, you dont even know your carrying it.. And the blade is larger than you'd think, but the package is perfect.. I went from a BM 707 to a Delica for EDC (love the 707, but delica is toooo nice fo the price)..

Anyway, for 60 bucks, you can not go wrong.. You will not find a blade this perfect for EDC in this pricerange..

Get the new limited edition grind and enjoy

I suspect Red Devil means he's got a knife greater than 3" in his pocket.

Military (general purpose)
Gayle Bradley (cutting tough material)
Delica (food)
Leatherman (pliers and wirecutters, screwdrivers in a pinch)
To be exact ;), and yes they all get used
