How long is the wait on a XM-18 if ordered directly? (Active Duty)

I see that Mr. Hinderer offers to sell XM series knives to military. I am in LOVE with the look and style of the XM-18, I would love to get my hands on one. My unit issued us a SOG Powerlock multitool and a Gerber Paraframe, niether of which I prefer to carry. I currently carry a Leatherman Skeletool CX and a Benchmade or Spyderco (a lot of different knives depending on what I feel like that day). I would much prefer to get one extremely nice knife to replace my others and the Hinderer seems to interest me much more than other high end options. I have several questions that I figure can be answered here.

Has anyone bought one directly from him or know how he handles it?

Does it have to be a duty knife? I plan to carry it both on and off duty if I end up getting one.

Do any of these blade steels fair better than the others in salt air conditions? (I spend a fair amount of time on the ocean)

All, well, many of your questions can be answered by sending a polite e-mail to Mr. Orlando. Easy way to do so is by logging in, then click his name found as the author of the only stickie.

Depends is the short answer. As I understand it they make their knives in shifts, so they work on XM-18s for a few months, then shift over to XM-24s, etc. Depends on which one you want and when you order.

I don't think they put any sort of quantifier on how you use it, at least they never did when I ordered mine. Common decency would imply that you at least planned to use it on duty and not just flip it. I ordered mine prior to deployments, but I don't think they require that.

As Need2Know said, just email them and they'll let you know.

Yeah bro I'm A.D. as well. You can email him from here on BF or directly on their homepage. I talked to him last month and again last week, after blade show is finished in june theyre going to do 3 months worth of the xm 18 3". the 24s will follow and xm18 3.5 will be around next summer. he assured me there would be enough to go around and to check back after blade. as for what you do with it i doubt they care because you could easily lie to them and it wouldnt matter. what does matter is you have a military or leo id thats active at the time you order and it is much much much cheaper then what you see ppl selling them for here. it honestly really pisses me off when i see something being sold for 300% of what it was bought for when the person selling it isnt the maker himself. and only picked it up to profit to begin with.

Yes, as has been said first by N2K - an email to Rob is going to net a very prompt, professional response from Rob.
Email will explain the time frame of offerings and the PayPal and email ordering procedure. Your Active Duty Status is the qualifier, your use is up to you.
Rob will undoubtedly (as I will) Thank you for your Service (Rob is a Vet as am I)
As for environment of use. The steels used are of the highest quality S.S., my experience was - proper maintenance is a must ( as with ALL your equipment to include your weapons) rinse with clear water, dry thoroughly and lubricate.
Umm, gettin' old, Hope that hit some of the high points.
