How long should a Knife last?

I guess this might be a pointless question, but with so many "lifetime warranties" I had to ask. I guess I'll narrow it down to EDC's like Spyderco Clipts, and your basic folder. I know I have some 3rd and 4th generation knives, and they are still going. So, what do you guys think? Sorry if anyone thinks this is a waste of a post, but I'm currious to see what people think.

A spyderco will last me about 2 years of heavy use. At that point it has enough wear from use and etc. that it's a bit sloppy.

I don't recall just how hard he used them but I have a couple of Grandpaws old slip joints and they still have plenty of life left.

I expect that unless I break them, the knives I currently own will outlast me by a longshot!

I guess that depends on how hard you use you EDC, and how high quality it is to begin with. I would consider a Sebenza a simple EDC folder, and would think even under fairly harsh conditions it would outlast me!:D

I have a Spyderco Police that I have had for about ten years. I can't see myself ever wearing it out. My Buck 110 is over thirty five years old now and it is still in decent shape.

These are the type of responses I thought I would here. Most of my knives are from my father and grandfather so they have seen a lot of use. They aren't exactly in great shape, but they still cut and hold an edge ok. Anyways, to me those old knives simply have character. But then again I can't stop buying the new ones either. I just wonder sometimes how long they will last because of the use of all the kinds of plastic in knives today. Thanks for all the replies.

I have so many knives now that I won't use any one of them enough to wear it out. You excellent question leads to similar questions. How long should a $20 knife last? A $100 knife? A $500 knife? Should the more expensive knife last longer?

The way I take care of my knives, I think my Grandkids, If not Great Grandkids will have all my folders and If they follow my advice, They will all be LNIB. :)
