How long to sharpen?

New to the forum and fairly new to knife sharpening. I think I understand the basics of sharpening on a whetstone, but I keep reading about people spending hours sharpening a single blade. I can't comprehend that because the only thing I can really feel on a blade is whether it has a burr or roll or not and that becomes pretty evident after a few minutes of sharpening. If I'm using a 1000/4000 grit stone, how long should it take me to do basic maintenance on a blade? Not using any crazy hard steels, Aus8 is probably the hardest.

Unless really pounded on or needing the angle changed, it shouldn't take more than a few minutes per side per stone in the progression.

If its a beater, the 1k will be a slow stone to do repairs but still will work. Add another ten minutes to the job.

Reprofiling, repair, mirror finish takes a lots of time.

Even longer without the proper abrasives for harder steels

Once you start going further down the rabbit hole it will all come together ;)

WELCOME

As HeavyHanded noted, a few minutes is typically all that's needed for basic maintenance.

For anything more and time can increase exponentially. ;)

Ok, that makes sense. As of now, Im just keeping my kitchen/camp/pocket knives sharp after a day of use so I think I'm doing it right more or less. Thanks!
