How long will you carry a new blade before deciding if she’s a keeper?

Hello all!

Yesterday I received the new knife I ordered and I have mixed feelings about it. I got a BM 940 and my edc for the last several years has been a Spidy tenacious. So the new one’s pluses are that it is lighter and thinner so it just disappears in the pocket but that thinness makes it a bit of a chore to open and once open i feel like it is a bit narrow in the hand. Also the axis lock is really nice but i have only had liner locks in the past so my thumb naturally goes there.

TIA

Carry & use for a week or so, then decide on reprofile of secondary bevel(s) and or primary bevel(s) based on persona use. Typically by this time performance thresholds are met or failed.

There have been a few times where I've opened a new knife, handled it for a minute or two, and known it wasn't for me.

But most of the time it takes me longer than that. Say a week for one I'm on the fence about, just to give it a chance. Sometimes I'll love a knife for a month and then realize if it's in my rotation it's never going to be picked over Similar Knife X.

There's no rhyme or reason. 🤷‍♂️ When I know, I know. I'm usually not in a rush.

Read as many reviews as I can and ask opinions on a model I am interested in before buying. Can't always handle on scene as usually stores are out of stock or don't carry enough anyways. Ask opinions here is great for starters. So far so good with my selections. Enjoy carrying in rotation the EDC knives I have.

Hit or miss for me. I have had knives for a long time before realizing they are not for me like the Drop/Ferrum Forge Falcon. Too chunky and small to be a joy to carry compared to larger more hand filling knives or smaller less obtrusive knives. Then there are other times like the Giant Mouse Ace Clyde that I will know the day of. For that one I tried to fix the action, play with the pivot, dye the scales, and then thin out the blade stock. All I wound up succeeding in doing was making the knife un-sellable

I don't buy a lot of knives, so I try to buy only knives I intend to keep. I normally buy at gun shows, so I've already inspected it. Only rarely do I order one, sight unseen, but so far I have been lucky. All get used occasionally, for something, even if it's just cutting up some steak for fajitas. Couldn't tell you what was the last knife I sold...

Different for every knife. Sometimes minutes, sometimes days, and sometimes weeks. Knives that I haven’t been drooling over for a while but just curious to check out the buzz on typically won’t last long for me. If I’m not completely feeling it right off the bat I’ll usually put it in my knife drawer. After a week or two if I don’t feel inclined to carry it or pick it up much I know I’ll be selling it.

On the other hand, some knives really grow on me after initially not being too sure about them. Lately I kind of just cycle through a top 5ish. If a new knife isn’t as good or better than the top ones, it won’t last long either.

The few that I’ve kept were pretty much instantaneous.
I was never Interested in the Manix 2 until a friend gave me one for Christmas. I only had to use a couple of times before realizing what a great folder it was.

I have yet to sell any knives, I've given a few away, a few reside in the junk drawer and a few more got disassembled or pitched (Cheap Blade HQ "Exclusives" are junk), Everything else goes in the collection chest and rotates through carry.
