Just for frame of reference how long would it take you guys to chop a tree down with a hatchet, heavy or light machete?

I did it in under an hour with a Cold Steel Kukri Machete. I wonder if it it would have been faster with a hatchet but I don't think so.

African or European?

I would use an axe. 15 minutes tops going slow. With your tool choice it would take me more than an hour.

Less than a minute using my Silky BigBoy saw.... I know since I have done it a few times already this spring. About twice as long for my GB Small Forest Axe....

Safely, between 5 and 10 minutes using a hatchet. Are you sure the tree was only 6-8"? An hour sounds like an awfully long time.

Ddi you just chop it down or did you cut it into lengths for firewood or trash?

My thoughts exactly...

I have a cheap condor machette and I've chopped down 6"-8" trees in minutes.

Maybe it's the way you are chopping; are you cutting at an angle or straight into the tree?

Yeah I cut it up afterward which I'm including in the time ( an thus the height of the tree ) but it might have been on the 8"+ thick side.

I think my real problem is it took me a second to figure out how to cut into the grain of the wood optimally--I spent probably 10 minutes getting like a 4" wide notch cut into the tree, but after that I started hitting the grain right and it was taking of gobs of wood at a time.

The trunk was pretty heavily impregnated with resin too, maybe that could be a thing? I know I've got quite a bit of fatwood to harvest off it pretty soon.

Dead or live? Hardwood or no? I'm talking about live poplar BTW. Much longer if it was dead.....

Sounds like you all need a better tree knife. Dan Keffeler can help you out with that...

I cut a sequoia down with my CS Recon 1 in less than ten minutes. Or was it days...

Silky for the win! :D I love choppers of all sort but when I need to do work, I choose the silky without hesitation.

I cut down this 8 in. pine or spruce with the Benchmade Adamas in about 20 min. Bigger fixed blades would make everything quicker and less painful though. Probably coulda did it in 3 minutes with a 7 in. fixed. Haven't actually chopped down any good sized tree's with my bigger fixed blades. Will have to see next time in woods although guarantee will be alot quicker than Adamas. But the 275 held up perfect against that 8 in tree. Took awhile though.:)
