I just received a little carabiner style Buck called "The Hitchhiker", model 268. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=685762

I was very surprised when I discovered that it was made in Japan. I have Bucks from the USA, China, Taiwan, Switzerland and now Japan.

Are there more surprises out there? I'd like to know how many countries have provided knives with the Buck brand on them.

They also has some assembled in Mexico around 2000, not sure it that counts for what your asking though???

The Vantage Avid has a 13C26 blade, Sandvik steel, so I'll take a WAG that the blade steel originated in Sweden.

Which could be, but Sandvik does have plants here in the USA. Not sure if they make sheet or roll steel here, but our weld rod is Sandvik USA made!

As far as the original question? I dont know I dont have any "offshore knives" ;)

I was just curious. I realise that some may have offshore steel in them, but I was wanting to know how many actually had the county of origin on the knife itself.

that looks complete except the assembled in Mexico pocket knives. The assy in Mex ones used US parts.

The little HitchHiker is kind of a cute little guy and for less than $10 it's pretty cool. I just got a Swiss Buck today and I have to say it's the first SAK that I've ever really liked. Maybe because it says Buck on it? A few swipes on the Sharpmaker and it's scary sharp.

No, the knives were assembled from 100% US parts, so they are marked USA.

The box for my 2000 301 stockman has "assembled in Mexico" on the sticker.

The 'Assembled in Mexico' Model were the 301/303/305/309, and the BuckTool. The difference between made in Mex and Assy in Mex is the ratio of parts made in that country.
Made in Mex = Mostly mexican made parts and assembled in Mexico
Assy in Mex = Mostly parts not made in Mexico, but assembled in Mexico (in this case 100% parts made in US, and assembled in Mex

This holds true for any consumer product you buy.
